Three-Week Pop-Up Modern Classes in December

Mary Willmeng is running a 3 class series this December!

Saturdays from 10:00-11:30am
December 3, 10, and 17

Mary’s class will explore groundedness, release, and fluidity through the body with a structured warm up, improvisational exercises, and choreographed phrase work. Phrase work will include full-bodied movement and gesture to allow for a full range of expression. Students will be encouraged to play within the container of choreographed movement to find their own voice within the offerings of class. Class is suitable for all levels. Classes will be held at Jawaahir Studios.

This link will connect you to the studio website with a map of the location.

Classes will be pay as you can with a suggested amount between $5-$10. You may pay with cash, check, Venmo, or PayPal. Allow a few minutes extra at your first class to sign the studio/class waiver. If you have taken my class before, you will see some familiar phrases, as well as some new material. Let’s keep moving together as the cold and dark months creep in!

Please reach out with any questions. My email is marywillmeng@gmail.com. I look forward to dancing together!

Afro-Modern, Ballet 2, Hip Hop, and Jazz Classes at Young Dance

Since 1987, Young Dance has encouraged youth in our community to build body and spirit through the art of dance. Our mission is to transform lives through movement. We are an inclusive community where creativity flourishes, encouraging personal and artistic excellence through diverse forms of dance.

Classes are already running and many are at capacity!

There is still room for students in Afro-Modern on Wednesday evenings from 7:00-8:30pm. Taught by Aneka McMullen, Afro-Modern Dance is a contemporary class where dancers explore full-body expression rooted in West African, Caribbean, and American dance traditions. Participants should be 10-18 years old. Also for students ages 10-18, Ballet 2 is taught by Hannah Pierce and meets on Tuesdays from 6:30-8:00pm. Young Dance teaches ballet skills from a body-positive lens that builds terminology, coordination, flexibility, and rhythm.

We are excited to add Hip Hop 3 and Jazz dance to the roster in January! Hip Hop 3 is for students ages 13-18 and meets on Mondays from 7:00-8:30pm. Taught by Waswa Kalema, the class is a high-energy introduction to many styles of Hip Hop including breaking, popping, locking, and house. Jazz dance, taught by Anat Shinar, combines rhythm and rootedness with light and flowing movements to create a full-bodied and unique movement language. Jazz will be offered on Thursdays from 5:00-6:30pm and is for students ages 8-14.

New classes begin Monday, January 2, and continue through Sunday, May 21, 2023. The final weekend of the session culminates in performances at the Luminary Arts Center.

Registration is open!

Friday Morning Jazz is Going on Pause – Three Classes Left

Dear Community:

Erinn Liebhard and Karla Grotting are so grateful for the past eight years of co-teaching Friday Morning Jazz Class at Zenon. We have decided to put FMJ on “pause” for a bit; we’re both spinning a lot of plates right now and had to set one down so the rest don’t drop. “Pause” means we intend to teach an open jazz class together again sometime in the future, continuing to offer the community a chance to engage with a jazz-music-forward, history-infused jazz class inspired by both social and concert dance ideas – we are invested in the presence of great open jazz class offerings for our community!

We will have three more classes at Zenon before this “pause”:
December 2 with Karla
December 9 with Erinn
December 16 with Karla and Erinn – this last day will wrap with a little celebration gathering after class: stay, socialize, feel community!

Thank you all: regulars, drop-ins, folks we see once every two years, and all of you who keep up with us in our Facebook group. We’ve thrived by sharing in this great sense of community and in the joy of dancing together. We appreciate you all, look forward to seeing you around the community, and will be back with an open public class for you when the timing is right!
