The Young Dance 2021-22 academic year is still open for registration. Enroll in your favorite dance classes, or try some new moves with fresh faces! We’re thrilled to welcome everyone back into our space after a long time away.

Young Dance is committed to offering a fun and developmentally appropriate curriculum. Our exceptional Teaching Artists bring an unparalleled level of excellence, where young artists can experience a myriad of styles and techniques. We provide a breadth of opportunities for youth to engage with dance in the way that feels best for them and that supports them in finding and lifting their voices.

Classes include Dance Together, Creative Movement, Hip Hop, Break Dancing, All Abilities Dancing, Modern, Ballet, Choreography, Performing Company, and more.

About the Practice
Move BIG, sweat and play in an energizing atmosphere each week! Movers will build awareness and explore expansive possibilities within their own individuality and identities. Through improvised and structured movement vocabulary, participants will be encouraged to research freedom, 3-D expansion, mobility, rigor, presence, and agency within an empowering experience.

Suitable for professional, pre-professional, and/or intermediate/advanced movers, ages 18+. Knee pads recommended. Led by AMP Co-Director, Joanna Lees. Come as you are!

Pre-registration strongly encouraged for in person, but not required. Registration information coming to our website soon!
Please arrive at least 10 minutes prior to practice start time if participating in person.

If class size needs to be limited, priority will be given to those who are registered.
It is REQUIRED that you register 30 minutes prior to practice start time for the Zoom option.

Threads Dance Nexus Winter Session Classes

Registration is now open for the Winter Session at Threads Dance Nexus!

Classes begin January 24, 2022 and include:

Modern Dance with Rae Charles Harge

Rae is a local choreographer, scholar, and dance educator in the Twin Cities.

Currently working on a Ph.D. in Dance Education at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, she is dedicated to advocating for racial equity both on the stage and in the classroom. She has taught at numerous preeminent studios, schools, and colleges including Carleton College, Macalester College, University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, the Performing Institue of Minnesota, and Summit Dance Shoppe.

Charles Harge is a graduate of New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts and the University of Michigan. She locates her own choreography at the intersection of jazz and modern and is greatly influenced by her work with artists and companies in New York as well as Minnesota including Jawole Willa Jo Zollar and Maria Bauman or Urban Bush Women, MBDance, Robert Battle, Camille A. Brown, Ron K. Brown, Karen L. Charles/Threads Dance Project, David Dorfman, Alonzo King, Rhythmically Speaking, Sydney Skybetter, and Kate Weare.

A dedicated performer, teacher, and creator, Karen Long Charles received a BFA Ballet/BS Computer Science from Texas Christian University and M.Ed. in Administration from Georgia State University. Charles has performed with numerous dance companies including Room to Move Dance Company (Atlanta, GA), Susan Warden Dance Company (Kansas City, MO), and was awarded a fellowship to study at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Charles served as Director at Perpich Arts High School and she was the founding Principal/Executive Director at Main Street School of Performing Arts. Charles has taught, choreographed, and presented works for James Sewell Ballet, Carleton College, Macalester College, University of Iowa, University of Georgia, Main Street School of Performing Arts, and Perpich Arts High School. Charles founded Threads Dance Project in 2011 where she is presently Artistic/Executive Director.

In January 2021, Threads moved to their new home, Threads Dance Nexus located at 2213 Snelling Avenue in Minneapolis. Their new home allows further expansion of their mission to examine, expose and celebrate the thread that connect us by providing a place for continued community connection through dance classes and other community events.

MotionArt Children’s Dance Classes

MotionArt focuses on nurturing children’s individual creativity while facilitating their understanding of the dance elements of space, time, and energy. Ages 3-6 explore these elements through playful, structured activities allowing them to expand their movement vocabulary, develop body awareness and gain self-confidence. Ages 7-10 explore the dance elements while being introduced to new movement skills and the creation of their own dances. Ages 11-13 expand their creative and kinesthetic awareness while learning basic movement skills of modern dance.

We are currently offering Creative Dance/Intro to Modern Dance classes for ages 7-10 at the Center for Performing Arts.

The School at TU Dance Center 2022 Spring Session

Registration is open for the 2022 Spring Session at The School at TU Dance Center. Classes start the week of January 10.

The Pre-Professional Program is an intensive course of study integrating modern, ballet, African dance, and creative workshops for students up to age 23. All classes in the Pre-Professional Program are offered in person with a virtual option, unless otherwise noted.

The Children & Teen Program introduces the joy of creative movement and beginning dance technique. Classes, divided by age, provide a comprehensive base on which to expand by developing body awareness, coordination, balance, flexibility, strength and musicality. All classes in the Children & Teen Program are offered in person with a virtual option, unless otherwise noted.

Dancing Together is a child and parent/caregiver creative movement class. This workshop is designed for children ages 2-4 and their parent/caregiver who are interested in a shared movement experience that engages the senses of curiosity and play.

Intermediate/Advanced Contemporary Dance with Chloe Nagle

This class explores somatic ideas through improvisation, set material, and composition. Students will learn material as well as generate movement solo and in small groups. We will collectively excavate technical ideas to develop a deeper embodied understanding and creative application. Informed by Alexander Technique principles, this class aims to approach technique practice from the inside-out and the outside-in, encouraging curiosity, creative play, and artistic expression. In-person class.
