Northrop Presents RUBBERBAND

RUBBERBAND
Online premiere: Thursday, April 8, 7:30pm CDT
Performance available on demand through Thursday, April 15, 11:59pm CDT

Vic’s Mix
Mixed repertory program, spanning RUBBERBAND’S nineteen years!

Artist Q&A following the performance

“Three points of contact” defines choreographer and RUBBERBAND founder Victor Quijada’s work and style as an unusually difficult yet expressive and highly athletic dance form that connects dancers to the stage, or each other, with three body parts. The three points describe his technique and also Quijada’s trio of cultures: Mexican heritage, Los Angeles upbringing, and French-Canadian residency. Vic’s Mix extracts notable works from Quijada’s extensive repertory as both a classically trained dancer and b-boy performer in a humorous yet thoughtful program filled with dance theater and both classical and original music.

Exploring the Enchantment

The Cowles Center and Minnesota Dance Theatre Artistic Director Lise Houlton look back at previous productions of The Enchantment and provide a discussion of themes from the classic fairy tale “Twelve Dancing Princesses,” which inspired the production. How do those themes resonate in today’s world? Is this a harmless enchantment, a means of escape, or something bewitchingly dark and dangerous?

Registration for this virtual showing ends two hours before the show begins. A ticket from this event will give you access to a virtual stream for this show.

Northrop Presents Bharatanatyam and Yoga: A Shared Connection

Northrop Presents
Bharatanatyam and Yoga: A Shared Connection
Monday, April 19, 5:00-6:00pm CDT
At Northrop, with a livestream option available.
FREE and open to the public, registration required.

As an art form, Bharatanatyam demands the conscious understanding of body, mind and spirit; this often translates as the balance of multiple qualities within each movement: strength and flexibility, inner relaxation and focus. Ultimately, both Bharatanatyam and yoga ask the practitioner to find their inner divinity in order to transcend the distractions and obstacles of the physical world.

This free, in-person and virtual workshop begins with an introduction by Ragamala’s Artistic Directors Ranee and Aparna Ramaswamy, followed by an all-levels yoga practice led by Aaron Asmundson, Program Director for Leadership Enrichment Programs at the University of Minnesota. Bring your own yoga mat and wear comfortable clothes, or join from the comfort of your home.

This film is presented in conjunction with Ragamala Dance Company.
Co-artistic directors Ranee Ramaswamy and Aparna Ramaswamy’s work embodies the artistic and spiritual traditions of India while creating a dialogue about the contemporary human experience. Their new work, Fires of Varanasi, is a ritual for the stage where time is suspended and humans merge with the divine, expanding upon the birth-death-rebirth continuum in Hindu thought to illuminate immigrant experiences of life and death in the diaspora.

Join us in WonderLand, a premier psychiatric hospital. Dr. Knight has the difficult task of treating a man who refers to himself as a “White Rabbit” and suffers from a severe anxiety disorder, a young woman named Alice with body dysmorphia, and a Queen figure suffering from narcissistic rage.

Collide tells this story using its signature blend of high-energy dance styles set to a modern pop-rock soundtrack.
