Les Grands Ballets Canadiens Dances Beethoven – Presented By Northrop

Les Grands Ballets Canadiens returns to Northrop for the first time since 2006, dancing two monumental masterpieces. The iconic four-note opening of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony—said to represent “Fate knocking on Man’s door”—inspired American choreographer Garrett Smith’s Complete. The late Uwe Scholz’s choreography for Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 is considered his masterwork—displaying inventiveness and exceptional musicality. As the music races along at an irrepressible pace, these gorgeous artists convey the sheer joy of dancing to one of the most perfect symphonies ever written.

TU Dance: THREAT by Yusha-Marie Sorzano

TU Dance is one of four dance companies participating in the pilot program The O’Shaughnessy Dance Cohort. THREAT is an evening-length work choreographed by TU Dance Guest Artist Yusha-Marie Sorzano.

THREAT is a concert dance theater work that aims to provoke an interrogation of the roles we play as individuals and communities in hierarchies. The work posits that hierarchies have the power to control our behavior and infiltrate our thoughts, even when no authority is present to enforce the rules. Using a physical language and soundscape that fuses multicultural traditions and styles of the West and the African Diaspora, this social exploration invites audiences into a modern narrative that speaks to the universal experience of authority, obedience, and rebellion.

Minnesota Dance Theatre Performs Carmina Burana

Minnesota Dance Theatre (MDT) will bring audience favorite Carmina Burana to the Luminary Arts Center January 26 – February 4, 2024.

Carmina Burana features Loyce Houlton’s masterful choreography reimagined as a total theater experience by MDT Artistic Director Emerita Lise Houlton, with Dominique Serrand.

Set to Carl Orff’s scenic cantata, this tour de force performance draws inspiration from the silent songs of 13th century vagrant monks’ poetic homage to passion. Carmina Burana brings the human pangs of love and lust, mixed with the earthly rumblings of fortune and fate, to a fully expressive celebration in a hedonistic romp of bodies, music, and movement.

The production presents a spectacular display of Twin Cities artistry, showcasing a dynamic mix of MDT dancers with the Minnesota Chorale, vocalists Anthony Potts, Linh Kauffman, and Gary Ruschman, and musicians Bob Adney, Barbara Brooks, David Hagedorn, and Tom Linker.

“[A] thrilling production… a dense explosion of passionate art.” – Star Tribune
