Class focuses on opening up curiosity, finding internal pathways within the body and the contrast of those same pathways. An assortment of texture, speed, density, length, force and resistance will be taught to open these skills. The Moving Practice class will differ from Mathew’s regular Contemporary Flow class by investigating, through improvisation, one’s body in space – inviting stillness, invisibility, and listening to your weight falling through space.

Originally from Illinois, dancer, choreographer, director, and creative Mathew Janczewski (he/him) has been residing in Minneapolis, MN since 1989. He was a company member, most notably with Shapiro & Smith Dance from 2007-2014 and JAZZDANCE! By Danny Buraczeski from 1992-97. As a dancer, Mathew has performed as a guest with the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company, Bebe Miller, and Jacek Luminski of Bytom, Poland. Over the years, he has performed the works of Beth Corning, Sean Curran, HIJACK, Marge Maddux, Shawn McConneloug, Jane Shockley, Robin Stiehm, Morgan Thorson, Doug Varone, and Cathy Young.

Balance, Stability, and Breath with Sarah Baumert

The lessons in this two-hour workshop will help improve a wide variety of functional movements, focusing on easier balance, effortless standing, and ease-filled graceful walking. We will explore in various positions including lying on the back, side, belly, and in standing.

Humans are designed to be upright in gravity. This is the human brain’s primary job – to balance and organize the body to be upright in gravity during all functional activities. Standing up on your two little feet might seem automatic and something you don’t think about too much, but this vital process of balancing keeps your brain very occupied! We will finesse our relationship to gravity, becoming more sensitive, responsive, and supple in our upright position.

This workshop is appropriate for all levels. It will help improve walking, running, dancing, jumping, and whatever your favorite functional movement is.

We are all quite different. Our attention spans and nervous systems have changed. But all of our brains have plasticity and we can form new habits yet again. We will lay on the floor together. We will orient ourselves to what it’s like to learn with others in the same room. We will get to know our feet in a novel way and experience how to find ease being upright in gravity. This workshop will only be offered in person.

Tuesday, August 9, 4:00-6:00pm
Space is limited. Pre-register to reserve your space.
There will be time for discussion and questions following the movement portion of the class.
BYOP – Bring Your Own Props
After registration you will receive an email from Sarah with the props that will be needed for this class.

This workshop will take place at the Threads Dance Center. Conveniently located in the Seward Neighborhood, Threads offers free parking and free side street parking, is a 5 minute walk from the Franklin Light Rail Station, and a 2-5 minute walk from nearest bus stops (lines 2, 9, 22, 67).

Proof of vaccination status or negative test requested. Minimum 6 participants; maximum 25 participants for live workshop. If cost is a barrier, please reach out to Sarah directly for pay-what-you-can options. Beginners to Feldenkrais are welcome!

Early Bird Registration Extended for Instinct Movement Intensive with Shane Larson

Join ARENA DANCES for one week of movement classes taught by guest artist Shane Larson, member of the renowned Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company. Participants will practice contemporary dance technique and learn a new original work as a part of this intensive. Targeted for the high-intermediate to advanced level dancer.

August 15-20, 2022
Monday–Saturday, 10:00am-3:00pm
Class: 10:00-11:30am
Rehearsal of new work: 12:00-3:00pm

Culminating in an informal showing of the work on Saturday, August 20, with the possibility of a performance showing aligned with the Happy Hour Artists in the 7th Annual CANDY BOX Dance Festival in April 2023 at The Southern Theater! ARENA DANCES’ Artistic Director, Mathew Janczewski will be present for pre-professional dancers to have career chats and be considered for ARENA apprenticeships during the creation of a new work by ARENA, Erased Steps, rehearsing March 2023-August with performances at Union Depot and Rochester Civic Center in August 2023.

Ages 16+.
Intensive capped at 15 participants.
Early Bird: $475 – register by July 24. General: $550.
Registration must be completed by August 7.

During class, dancers will build a bottom to top, floor to standing modular class that deepens with task-based repetition, while encoding new movement pathways through basic shapes. Students are encouraged to learn-by-doing, rather than to learn and ‘perform’, relying on muscle memory to strengthen pathways. Architectural forms of the body are created, deconstructed, and recycled within the containers of momentum and temperature, offering a full-body, far-reaching experience of movement.

After class, dancers will focus on creating—using skills as scaffolding for building material as a community. We’ll spend time talking about memory and time, graphing separate experiences together to focus and distill common patterns, shapes, and anecdotes. The final object created will be an investigation that is distinctly your own and something that can be taken into future experiences.
