make : magnify Interdisciplinary Arts Festival

Calling Twin Cities artists of all mediums interested in collaborative practice for creation and performance opportunities!

A team from the University of Minnesota Dance Production class is producing a multi-disciplinary arts festival showing new works that will be made collaboratively. Our goal is to connect artists in the community in co-creation practices through residency periods.

6-9 artists of various disciplines will be grouped in artistic partnerships of 2 or 3. Artists will be expected to create a multi-media work with their collaborators during a 2-week residency. These residencies will take place between March 11 and April 5 with a festival-style performance on April 13. This will be located within the Arts Quarter of the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus. Residency times are flexible. 20 hours in a rehearsal space are guaranteed for each residency.

Applicants should have an interest in working with multiple disciplines and a desire to show original work. They should also have an open mind to new ideas and processes!

Apply here by January 25. If you have additional questions about the project or application, please contact us at makemagnify@gmail.com.

Minnesota Dance Theatre Performs Carmina Burana

Minnesota Dance Theatre (MDT) will bring audience favorite Carmina Burana to the Luminary Arts Center January 26 – February 4, 2024.

Carmina Burana features Loyce Houlton’s masterful choreography reimagined as a total theater experience by MDT Artistic Director Emerita Lise Houlton, with Dominique Serrand.

Set to Carl Orff’s scenic cantata, this tour de force performance draws inspiration from the silent songs of 13th century vagrant monks’ poetic homage to passion. Carmina Burana brings the human pangs of love and lust, mixed with the earthly rumblings of fortune and fate, to a fully expressive celebration in a hedonistic romp of bodies, music, and movement.

The production presents a spectacular display of Twin Cities artistry, showcasing a dynamic mix of MDT dancers with the Minnesota Chorale, vocalists Anthony Potts, Linh Kauffman, and Gary Ruschman, and musicians Bob Adney, Barbara Brooks, David Hagedorn, and Tom Linker.

Veils Veins Void: Ruby Josephine Dance Theater’s Premiere Dance Production

Ruby Josephine Dance Theater (RJDT) is thrilled to unveil it’s debut full-length performance as a new company.

Friday, February 2 at 7:00pm – Reception to follow
Saturday, February 3 at 2:00pm
Sunday, February 4 at 7:00pm
The Southern Theater

Imagining what happens when the veils between our material world and the spirit world drop, we follow 8 explorers through this dramatic, intimate and soul-shifting adventure. Each section of the piece takes us through different layers of this revealed space; an exterior awakening in Veils, an interior meditation in Veins, and facing the great eternal unknown in Void.  The atmosphere of this journey is given immersive depth through a full original music score, composed by artist Cooper Lee Smith. Come along with our dancers as feelings resonate, revelations emerge, and questions remain beautifully unanswered.

Direction and choreography: Ruby Josephine Smith
Dancers: Brenna Mosser, Colin Myles Edwards, Jake Nehrbass, Laura Sukowatey, Karen Christ-Aalgaard, Kendall Kramer, Sara Karimi, Shannon Hartle-Dolan
Original Music: Cooper Lee Smith

Tickets: $25/general admission, $20/students.

The Museum of Russian Art Seeks Dancer/Choreographer

The Museum of Russian Art seeks a dancer/choreographer to create a short work inspired by our upcoming exhibition, Zoran’s Surrealist Sculptures: Dry Neck of the Pig and Other CuriosWe are interested in movement as a form of museum interpretation, and we imagine dance as embodied knowledge, offering museum visitors a unique way of experiencing artwork.

We anticipate a two-part process: first, getting to know the exhibition, engaging with the artwork, learning the space, and experimenting with movement. Second, performing the short work (completed or in-process) 2-4 times over the course of the exhibition, which runs from February 3, 2024 through May 26, 2024. Compensation is a flat fee of $400.

Possible themes for exploration might include surrealism, the relationship between humans and nature, environmental care, materiality, power, ecology, sustainability, climate, folklore (and we’re sure there are many other possibilities as well!).

Interested dancers should submit a resume and brief statement of interest (a paragraph is great!) to kmckay@tmora.org by February 2, 2024. We encourage submissions from students, emerging choreographers, scholar-practitioners, and those wishing to explore nontraditional dance spaces. Solo artists and/or small ensembles (2-3 dancers) are welcome to submit.

The Museum of Russian Art (TMORA) promotes understanding of the art, people, and culture of Muscovite Russia, the Russian Empire, the Soviet Union and its former republics through outstanding exhibitions, cultural presentations, and educational programs serving the people of Minnesota and the nation. The Museum upholds an independent voice and the freedom of expression to carry out its mission unconstrained by influence from foreign governments, political actors and/or corporate or individual interests.
