The Arena – Moving Practice with Sarah McCullough

Moving Practice is a weekly class series for professional dancers. Classes prioritize rigor, diversity of contemporary aesthetics, variety of class content, and commitment.

Sarah McCullough teaches Moving Practice
New time! Tuesdays, 9:30-11:00am

Professional-level dancers of all styles are welcome.
Pre-registration and payment beforehand encouraged.
Suggested price of $17 per class. Pay-as-able option on all classes – we would rather you join us than not be able to attend due to financial limitations.

The goal of this class is to create a space where every mover can indulge in the movement their body desires. The core themes of this practice will include sensory exploration, movement as meditation, and engaging with the body’s intuition. We will move through improvisation and phrase work to engage the senses and awaken the body with a focus on curiosity and aliveness.

Sarah McCullough (she/her) is a Minneapolis-based movement artist and educator. Originally from Virginia, she attended James Madison University and earned her BA in Dance and Mathematics. Since joining Minneapolis’ dance community in 2018, she has performed the works of Carl Flink, Mathew Janczewski, Alexandra Bodnarchuk, Berit Ahlgren, Helen Hatch, Marisol Herling, and more. Alongside her performance work, Sarah is an educator in contemporary forms. While at JMU, she served as Co-Director of JMU’s Associate Dance Ensemble where she led a weekly company class and mentored 20 first-year dance majors in the early stages of their collegiate dance journey. She has led classes at the Limón Twin Cities Intensive, ARENA DANCES’ Instinct Summer Intensive, The University of Winchester (UK), North Carolina State University, as well as several high school dance programs and studios across Minnesota and Virginia.

ARENA DANCES and GTMD23 – Please Consider a Gift

Give to the Max Day 2023! ARENA DANCES’ campaign goal is to raise $15,000.

Here is a selection of ARENA’s recent accomplishments, as well as our upcoming events for the 23/24 Season!

Our 28th season began with sold out performances and standing ovations for Erased Steps at Union Depot in St. Paul. The talents of 15 dancers, local composer Zach Baltich, two voice actors, and lighting designer Heidi Eckwall coalesced to connect with 350 audience members. Excerpts were performed for Green MPLS – Summer at Peavey Plaza and the Franconia Sculpture Park.

This is the pilot year teaching Dance Pedagogy to North High School Dance Company Students! This project broadens our roster of teaching artists and seeks to teach North high school students employable skills within the dance field. Additionally, ARENA’s DanceON program offers after-school programs to five metro area K-12 schools this school year.

Upcoming, the inaugural snowBIRD creative residency kicks off January 3-13 in Palm Desert. ARENA will travel with three dancers for creation, master classes, and an in-progress showing. In March, a new collaboration with Taja Will premieres at the Cowles Center, featuring five amazing performers and Queen Duin as live DJ and lighting designer. Finally, the eighth annual CANDY BOX Dance Festival presents the work of seven different choreographers, presenting the artistry of more than 30 artists.

Our ongoing programming includes the monthly Floorwork community conversation and potlucks to support and share resource knowledge. Additionally, our oral excavation of local dance lore enters the 12th season of Studio Stories: Reminiscing Twin Cities Dance History with 140 interviews and over 13,000 downloads.

ARENA DANCES aims uplift the Twin Cities dance community and enable artists to excel the field of dance. We hope you may consider a gift to ARENA Dances that is meaningful to you.

As Give to the Max Day approaches, be sure to share what you can with your favorite organizations and artists – every bit counts!
