Lucid Movement Workshop

Lucid Movement is a new practice exploring how we can “journal” with our bodies. Using an integration of yoga, dance, and physical theater techniques we will let movement be our guide as we explore ideas together and perhaps come away with a moment of inspiration, aha, or shared laughter. This session is focused on joy and the question of what makes us feel delight. All movement experience levels welcome – bring your body and your curiosity

Saturday, June 15
2:00-4:00pm
Sliding scale, $20-30.

Sarah Zuber (she/her) E-RYT, YACEP  is a teacher, singer, mover and poet. She’s been both student and teacher of yoga and mindfulness for over ten years, the last 7 spent teaching in an eating disorder treatment setting, and is currently in her third year of training to become a teacher of Alexander Technique, a modality focused on cultivating ease and freedom in the body. Sarah is curious about the concepts of body as home, body as vessel, body as instrument to create with and live from. She wants to live out the question, “how can we live in greater congruence with our bodies and the earth?” Sarah loves getting her hands caked with earth in her garden, reveling in the pleasure of poetry and language, and walking and resting besides Minneapolis’ beautiful lakes.

Evie Digirolamo (she/they) is a physical theater practitioner and teaching artist based in the Twin Cities. She has practiced with Sandbox Theatre since 2012 where she uses generative practices and ensemble-focused process to create new multi-disciplinary work. Evie founded the aerial theater The Swingset, which explores dynamic movement as storytelling. As a teaching artist, she has received training in drama therapy techniques and uses expressive arts to communally practice expanding access, advocacy, bodily autonomy, balanced relationships, personal boundaries, healthy risk taking, process grief and change, and spread the joy of expressing ourselves together. The Art of Relationships curriculum she wrote in collaboration with Upstream Arts is used in schools and day centers all over the metro area.

Wayfinding: A Creative Conversation and Film Sharing

Tuesday, June 18 at 7:00pm
Free event, advanced registration encouraged.

Join us for Wayfinding, a creative conversation and informal dance film sharing featuring short films by 2024 McKnight International Choreographer Meryl Zaytoun Murman, Winona artist Sharon Mansur and Leila Awadallah. The films will explore their shared Arab/SWANA (Southwest Asian and Northern African) heritage, gender and sexuality, and diasporic bodies, and a guided discussion will center these themes. Winona State Professor Mary Jo Kilnker will lead the discussion.

Murman was named the 2024 McKnight International Choreographer for her work as a multi-disciplinary artist whose art juxtaposes choreographic, cinematic, and live art practices to create movement pieces that emphasize interactivity and intimacy. She has taught and worked deeply in several international communities including Thessaloniki and Ukraine. Her queer films and choreographies derived from experiments at the intersection of cinema and dance disrupt popular notions of spectacle, the body, virtuosity, and gender.

This event is part of a month-long residency in Winona and the Twin Cities. There will be a variety of events that allow Murman to share her multiple artistic practices. View the full residency schedule.

This free event will be co-sponsored by Art of the Rural and will take place at the Winona Arts CenterReservations are strongly encouraged.

Reasons for Moving

Reasons for Moving is an interdisciplinary performance about the experiences of first, second, and third generation immigrants. Bringing together dance, theater, and digital media, Reasons for Moving frames performance as a site to engage community conversation about how cultures of origin inform our identities outside of their homelands.

Performers are: Kalala Kiwanuka-Woernle, whose mother left Uganda for the UK and later came to the US on a student visa; Mai Moua Thao, born in a refugee camp in Thailand; and Skye Reddy, whose family lost their ancestral homelands in the colonial Partition of South Asia. Their families’ biographies anchor an exploration of intergenerational and social negotiations of culture, memory and imagination.

Directed by Cláudia Tatinge Nascimento with media and sound design by Eliot Gray Fisher, lighting design and technical direction by Thomas Barrett, and costume design by Lynn Farrington.
