Carmen in the 1920s

Swing dance goes en pointe with this playful yet fiery twist on an opera classic. Dance through the roaring 20s with Carmen, a fiercely independent charmer on a journey of fated love. Accompanied by a live jazz ensemble to a fresh arrangement of Georges Bizet’s bold score, Carmen in the 1920s bristles with excitement, danger, and destiny.

Young Dance Presents Radically One Together

At Young Dance, we approach each season with a theme. This year, our theme is Radically One (Together).

As a youth arts organization, we work hard to foster an environment where students can safely and confidently express their individuality. Concurrently, we strongly believe in the power of building community through movement.

One of our core values is to foster in our students a commitment to self, to the group, and to lifelong learning. This year, we spent time digging deeper into these words, unpacking and dissecting the question: How can we support the individual, radically accept one another, build community, and fight collectively for the change we want (and need!) to see in the world?

The Young Dance Performing Company is pleased to be returning to the theater to present original pieces choreographed by Aneka McMullen, Blake Nellis, and Margaret Ogas, plus a piece collectively made by the upper level dancers. Additional guests include students from the Choreography, Hip Hop, Breaking, Modern, and All Abilities Dancing classes.

Movement as Language: Workshop Series and Performance Opportunity

This workshop will provide an introduction to dance and choreographic tools. This 2023 workshop series will focus on the theme of migration. Participants will be guided through movement exercises and encouraged to develop their own choreography as a way of storytelling. We will examine migration from our unique perspectives as a transition or transformational experience in life. Workshops focus on using your body as an instrument for expression and are open to adults of all abilities and levels of dance experience. All workshops are free!

Led by Aneka McMullen, Non Edwards, Carmen “Meli” Lucia Lincoln, and Erika Martin.

At the end of the workshop series, 5 participants will be invited to complete the cast for a community performance at the Southern Theater, June 16-17. All workshop participants who are interested are invited to apply to join this creative process! These artist positions are paid. BIPOC, LGBTQ+, ESL, and community members with disabilities are encouraged to participate. No dance experience required.

TU Dance Center: Community Class with Stephon Williams

A collaborative and creative environment to workshop and develop choreographic performance work.

Stephon Williams is a New York City-based dancer/choreographer born and raised in the Bronx, New York. He earned his degree in Dance with a concentration in Performance and Choreography from SUNY Potsdam. Stephon has been trained in a wide variety of dance styles with a strong emphasis in hip-hop, contemporary, ballet, and modern. He has performed in numerous dance competitions, live performances and television shows around the country, including the American Dance Festival, Paramore at MSG, and 21 Pilots on the Seth Myers show. Stephon has choreographed work for artist ALUS. He has trained with choreographers such as Theresa Stone, Hamilton Evans, Rhapsody James, and Gregory Dolbashian. Stephon is currently a freelance dancer with The Dash Ensemble founded by Gregory Dolbashian. Stephon is excited to debut his new work in collaboration with the TU dancers.

I A.M. Arts presents “Re-Imagining Station” with Jamie J. Philbert: Frequencies for Healing and Illustrating African Diasporic Consciousness

Over the course of 5 sessions, each two hours, interdisciplinary artist, martial artist, and cultural movement scholar, Jamie J. Philbert, will guide participants in developing collaborative community “stations” that seek to benefit African diasporic mediascapes and landscapes.

Sessions will be framed through Philbert-Kalinda Technique for dance and performance and include reflexive writing practice, sonic extra-somatic experiences, and an African diasporic martial arts-based movement vocabulary.

James Sewell Ballet Summer Dance Intensive

Join James Sewell Ballet this summer for our dance intensive running June 12-July 1, 2023.

Featuring Guest Choreographer and Instructor, Shohei Iwahama!
Geared toward pre-professional and young adult dancers with intermediate/advanced technique.

2023 Shawngrām Summer Intensive: Processing to Re-Frame

This two-week intensive in ADT’s signature movement aesthetic, Yorchhā, and our choreographic practice, Shawngrām, will invite participants into building physical strength and emotional stamina through a daily movement practice. Yorchhā combines movement principles from Odissi, the traditional Indian dance technique; Chhau, the martial art form from Odisha; and from Vinyasa Yoga. Shawngrām is the creative process for ensemble-based choreography to share a mosaic of stories and emotional landscapes and build justice-based collectivity through movement. This year’s thematic focus takes its inspiration from community processions taking up public space to re-direct our relationships to power and each other.

Our theme this year is “Processing to Re-frame.” We are inspired by the BIPOC organizers of The Uprising and other justice movements who interrupt constructed “normals” and publicly refuse to accept systemic violences. Processions are designed to reveal the potential of movement and dance as a methodology for organizing. Your participation will enrich our work and our commitment to route choreography through justice and community. We hope it will offer us all different provocations about the role of art and dance in civic life and movements for social change.

We are currently exploring an opportunity to offer the culminating performance as part of a procession across city streets in keeping with our theme of “processing to re-frame”, and in partnership with leaders from our BIPOC communities.

Threads Dance Project Summer NexGen/Youth Dance Project

Join Threads Dance Project this summer for an expanded version of our NexGen/YDP (Youth Dance Project)!

NexGen/YDP uses a holistic approach to training future dance artists. Youth will receive high-level training and education in ballet technique, modern dance technique, embodied movement exploration, and nutrition from dance and healthcare professionals.

July 3-15
For youth ages 8 and older.

Group 1 – Beginning
