Young Dance Seeks Teaching Artists for 2022–23 Session and Beyond

Young Dance is seeking teachers, assistants, and substitutes for 2022-23 and beyond. Teachers with experience in the following styles are encouraged to apply: Hip Hop, Jazz, Musical Theater, Afro-Modern, Modern/Contemporary, Ballet, Percussive, and Creative Movement. Experience working with dancers of all abilities is a plus, but not required.

Founded in 1987, we believe young people are artists with something important to say and that working across differences is a benefit to all. Our mission is to transform lives through movement. We are an inclusive community where creativity flourishes and healthy risk-taking is encouraged. Our classes are open to everyone of all levels and abilities. Participants enjoy our collaborative and student-led approach to dance education. Our curriculum emphasizes technique, improvisation, and choreography through the elements of dance: Body, Action, Space, Time, and Energy. Dancers develop skills in observing, participating, and reflecting in a safe and supportive environment that values a commitment to self, to the group, and to lifelong learning.

The pay rate is $48/hour for lead teaching, and $24/hour for assisting.

Collide Theatrical Seeking Box Office Attendant

Collide Theatrical Dance Company is looking to hire a box office attendant for the remaining two shows of our 2022-2023 season:

SKOL is a full-length show that will be performed in March and April at the Southern Theater, and Our Stories is a cabaret performance at our St. Paul studio in May. For a full list of show dates and times, visit www.collidetheatrical.org/show-dates.

Duties include:

  • checking in attendees
  • marking reserved seating and distributing VIP bags
  • helping with set-up and take-down
  • working with the Southern Theater’s box office staff
  • other tasks as needed

Pay is $20/hour, 4-hour minimum per show. Paid training. For each performance, the box office assistant needs to arrive two hours prior to the show. Showtimes are generally 7:30pm Thursday-Saturday, and 2:00pm and 5:00pm on Sunday.

Interested applicants should email a resume and cover letter to admin@collidetheatrical.org. Please only apply if you are able to commit to at least half of the dates for a show. Priority will be given to those who can be at every performance.

The McKnight Fellowships for Dancers and the McKnight Fellowships for Choreographers annually award three $25,000 fellowships to mid-career Minnesota dancers and three $25,000 fellowships to mid-career choreographers. The awards are unrestricted and can help an artist set aside periods of time for study, reflection, experimentation, and exploration; take advantage of an opportunity; or work on a new project.

Floorwork: Conversations and Knowledge Sharing Potluck

Floorwork: a communal conversation and shared meal. Every first Saturday! Floorwork was developed to hold conversations, knowledge-sharing, and a supportive space for dance artists and people who like to move.

Ben Frost: Cold Air Rises

See the world premiere of the first section of the forthcoming opera, commissioned by The Great Northern and performed by MPLS (imPulse) with dancer Amanda Sachs and libretto by Robert MacFarlane. In partnership with Minnesota Opera’s Luminary Arts Center and American Composers Forum.

Drawing upon J.A. Baker’s prophetic 1967 book The Peregrine, Australia-born/Iceland-based artist Ben Frost presents the new choral performance and installation Cold Air Rises. This new work in development is a collaboration with acclaimed British nature writer Robert MacFarlane. Local ensemble MPLS (imPulse) and dancer Amanda Sachs will perform this first movement of what will eventually form Frost’s next opera, commissioned by The Great Northern at Minnesota Opera’s newly renovated Luminary Arts Center. Join us for a sound experience like none other, a beautiful story of obsession and transformation.

RadioBody: Radiohead Danced and Played in Jazz

Rhythmically Speaking dance company is back at Amsterdam Bar and Hall with the premiere of RadioBody, a live show driven by and reflecting the toil and triumph embedded in the music of pioneering alt-electronic band Radiohead.

Featuring live dance, screen dance, and projection designs set to original jazz renditions of Radiohead tunes played live by a quartet of excellent local jazz musicians, RadioBody is sure to excite dance, jazz and Radiohead fans alike.

PARADISE at The Southern Theater

Hatch Dance presents PARADISE, a new dance theater piece premiering February 16-19, 2023 at The Southern Theater in Minneapolis.

Creatively led by Jon Ferguson (The Nature Crown, Super Monkey, Please Don’t Blow Up Mr. Boban) and Helen Hatch (Hatch Dance, Au, LDV), PARADISE combines contemporary dance, improvisation, physical theater, clown, and music to spark moments of joy, relief, and honesty through a journey beyond the shroud of the everyday. PARADISE marks Jon Ferguson’s first work since returning to the Twin Cities, and first collaborative venture between Ferguson and Hatch, who are joined by performers Artemis Brown, Juliana Johnson, Kendall Kramer, Javan Mngrezzo, Ayaka Moriyama, and Genevieve Waterbury. Original music conceived by Seth Conover and Joseph Strachan will be played live, with sets and design by multi-disciplinary artist Ashley Mary.

Ballet Hispánico Diálogos

Ballet Hispánico is the largest Latinx/Latine/Hispanic cultural organization in the United States and one of America’s Cultural Treasures. The company’s 50+ year history, and its commitment to community arts partnerships, create a platform that invites participants to formulate and express opinions about their social and cultural environment. Ballet Hispánico’s Diálogos (Dialogues) is a series devoted to examining issues centered on dance, race, and culture. This conversation includes Eduardo Vilaro, Ballet Hispánico’s Artistic Director and CEO, as well as BIPOC cultural leaders from the Twin Cities: Maija Garcia, Director of Education and Professional Training at Guthrie Theater; Maia Maiden, Director of Arts Learning and Community Engagement at Ordway Center for the Performing Arts; and Toni Pierce-Sands, Founder and Artistic Director of TU Dance Center. Fernando Rodriguez, Director of the University of Minnesota’s Multicultural Center for Academic Excellence, will moderate. Together these luminaries will discuss current issues at the intersection of arts, social justice, and community.

University of Minnesota’s Dance Theatre Presents MOVES!

Featuring choreography by Dance faculty Jess Pretty and dance students Vy Nguyen and Hina Sasaki.

Of her work, Jess Pretty writes, “Who we are is a direct reflection of who we are in relationship to. Much of this work looks at methods of relations as a pathway to understanding the self. This work is archival and intimate, relying on the personal story as the grounds for research. What I hope to display is in many ways a living archive, and in most ways a celebration of bodies moving together.” Always and Forever is the first chapter of a larger work that Jess is making titled Call and Response, which will premiere in June 2024 at the Chocolate Factory Theater in New York City.
