Improvisation and set phrase work will be used to engage the senses and harness athleticism with a focus on curiosity and aliveness.

Sarah McCullough (she/her) is a Minneapolis-based movement artist and educator. Originally from Virginia, she earned her BA in Dance and Mathematics from James Madison University. Since moving to Minnesota in 2018, she has performed with Black Label Movement, ARENA DANCES, Alexandra Bodnarchuk, HoneyWorks, Hatch Dance, and more. As an educator, she has been invited to offer classes at the Limon/Black Label Twin Cities Intensive, ARENA DANCES’ Instinct Intensive, The University of Winchester (UK), North Carolina State University, as well as several high school dance programs throughout the Twin Cities. The Arena – Drop-in Contemporary Movement Generation with Mathew Janczewski

Contemporary Movement Generation with Mathew Janczewski
Fridays, 10:00-11:30am
At the Arena, now through March 17.
$0-17. Pre-register!

Suggested $17 per class, but ARENA DANCES offers a pay-as-able option on all classes. We would rather you join us than not be able to attend due to financial limitations.

This class is not a technique class. We will focus on creative generating of movement, concepts of choreography, and opening up curiosity, finding a variety of approaches to the expressive quality of movement. There will be a very brief warm-up and the majority of the class will then be focused on choreographic principles.

Mathew’s work as Artistic Director of ARENA DANCES is best described as contemporary, spanning an array of styles – from quietly evocative to physically demanding, full of spiraling momentum that draws energy into the core and spreads it out like disco ball beams of light. At times, movement focuses on the dancers’ bends and folds, creating shape as one shifts and moves, forging moments of connection.

The Arena – Drop-In GYROKINESIS® Method with Non Edwards

Mathew Janczewski states, “I feel like a superhero after taking this class with Non Edwards.”

The GYROKINESIS® Method offers exercises rooted in full-body movement that builds skill in coordination and proprio/interoception. Exercises can be performed seated on an armless chair or stool, standing, and on hands and knees. We will work on the seven spinal movements, joint articulation, and cultivating strength with coordinated breath while transitioning through sequences with fluidity. Gyrokinesis addresses the entire body, opening energy pathways, stimulating the nervous system, increasing range of motion, and creating functional strength through rhythmic, flowing movement sequences. Non Edwards is a dancer, choreographer, and Gyrokinesis Method Trainer working in the Twin Cities since 2009.

Studio Stories: Reminiscing on Twin Cities Dance with Annie Enneking

Join ARENA DANCES for our weekly Studio Stories podcast, where each week we reminisce on Twin Cities dance history with a new special guest. This week, premiering January 12, we sat down with Annie Enneking for Season 9, Episode 116.

Annie Enneking is a lover and a fighter. She writes unflinchingly vivid and nuanced songs about being a person in a world full of people, and frankly about having a body at a particular place in time. She fronts and founded the mischievous rock band, Annie and the Bang Bang.  Annie is quite famous from her days with Children’s Theater Company, a founding member of JAZZDANCE! by Danny Buraczeski, and is a 2010 Playwrights’ Center McKnight Theater Artist Fellow, a triple threat with all the chops of acting, singing, and dancing.
