Free Waving Workshop with Bzy

Saturday, May 18
3:00-5:00pm

I am organizing my first Waving 101 Class for All Levels in Saint Paul! This is a 2-hour workshop aimed toward you gaining more knowledge, abilities, and inspiration. This workshop will give you a broader sense of self-expression by better understanding this style’s foundations. This is especially for people who want to explore and learn the basics for the first time, are experienced in other styles and genres, or value deepening their skills within waving.

In this workshop, we will focus on waving foundations to help us understand the layers of isolation within the body. We’ll awaken muscles, tendons, and joints that may be used for the first time as we explore the true feeling of separation from each of them. We will then thread them back together under tension to achieve true sequential movement, creating the wave-like effect.

We’ll be exploring all of this within our hands, arms, and full body. Lastly, we will be covering the history of the movement style itself. Learning about its origins, creators, where it is now, and everywhere in between.

The workshop is open to all levels but will be focused on beginners – if you have ever wondered if this is something for you, it would be a perfect workshop to try!

We will move in either socks or shoes; bring water and an open mind.

This is a free class. RSVP here.
Donations are accepted.

Let’s move!

Alexandra Bodnarchuk is a Carpatho-Rusyn American choreographer and cultural activist based in Minneapolis, MN. As the Artistic Director and choreographer for Doma Dance Theater, Bodnarchuk creates original works for the stage and screen that draw together her ethnic heritage with contemporary movement practices. Centering the body as a tangible site of culture, Bodnarchuk explores questions of self-expression, community, dispossession, and cross-cultural identity through works that range from solo pieces to evening-length group performances. By amplifying her ethnic heritage and probing the connections among the Carpatho-Rusyn experience and diasporic communities around the world, Bodnarchuk offers a potent invitation to rediscover the unrecognized histories embedded in each of us. EMBODY PALESTINE

Sunday, June 2
3:00-5:00pm

EMBODY PALESTINE is a workshop by Leila Awadallah (Body Watani Dance) held in collaboration with Meryl Zaytoun Murman, 2024 McKnight International Choreographer. This workshop will guide participants through embodied explorations as a process of communal reflection on the range of emotions stirred by the genocide in Gaza.

To what extent can we use our bodies to connect with experiences we did not have, but learn about through media? How can the body respond and tend to the traumatic imagery in the news? Meryl will facilitate participants through movement and vocal explorations using gesture, mimicry, and embodiment as a practice of awareness and communication based on a desire to process the human suffering we are witnessing with physical understanding.

In collaboration, Meryl and Leila will share reflections on the interconnectedness of many crises in the region and the ways they work within movement spaces to interweave complex solidarities across bodies. How do we resist together? What actions can we take toward a more healing-oriented future?

Dance experience is not necessary, and participants will engage at their own range of intensity.

Advanced registration required.
Recommended donation of $5-15 at event. 75% of the income will be donated.
