Join choreographer Chloe Nagle and filmmaker Kym McDaniel for a series of programs including performances, screenings, work-in-progress showings and a dance filmmaking workshop at the Red Eye Theater. Performances and screenings premiere October 7, 8, and 14 at 7:00pm, with a Dance Filmmaking Community Workshop on October 8 at 4:00pm. Doors open at 6:30pm, tickets for purchase at the door. October 7 at 7:00pm: Entrance and Exit Strategies 
Chloe Nagle and Kym McDaniel introduce themselves to the Minneapolis dance community in an evening of experimental film and improvisation scores. After developing debilitating chronic pain from a dance injury, McDaniel created the films entitled Exit Strategies. Over the course of five short films, she questions the intersection between trauma, chronic illness, and healing. Nagle’s improvisation score engages audience participation to explore individual and collective choice-making.

October 8 from 4:00-6:00pm: Dance Filmmaking Workshop
In this free workshop open to all ages and experience, participants collaborate in pairs to create a one-minute choreographic one-take video, highlighting the choreography of a body in motion. Final one-take projects will be screened at the beginning of The Language of Gesture! Participants also receive free entrance to the evening’s program. Register for workshop here.

October 8 at 7:00pm: The Language of Gesture 
The Language of Gesture is a hybrid film/dance touring program premiering in Minneapolis for the first time. Curated by Kym McDaniel, the films within the program explore artists who use movement and gesture as a means of communication. Featured film and movement artists include Chanelle Lajoie, Terrance Houle, Martine Syms, Ariana Gerstein, A.M. Baggs, and Chloe Nagle.

October 14 at 7:00pm: Work-In-Progress Showing
Kym McDaniel and Chloe Nagle premiere an immersive, multimedia collaborative work investigating boundary setting and the body’s relationship with trauma. By creating dance and video improvisation structures with elements of unpredictability, the artists seek to translate how pain shapes interaction with ourselves, other people, and the environment.

Amidst the fall colors and falling leaves, dancers Sarah Baumert, Suzette Gilreath, Erika Hansen, Megan Mayer, and Leslie O’Neill perform in a new, site-specific Sound Garden installation at Texa-Tonka Park in St. Louis Park, along the majestic North Cedar Lake Trail, next to Victoria Lake. This premier performance directed by composer JG Everest will also feature site-specific poetry by Chavonn Shen, Lisa Yankton and many more, along with site-specific photography and natural sculptures created in a community workshop by sculptor Jim Proctor.

The Fall Sound Garden event is a free, family-friendly, self-guided event that features a sound installation of 60+ small, wireless speakers, distributed throughout the park, with live accompaniment by roving musicians and dancers, and live poetry and site-specific visual art. Each small speaker is playing a different part of the whole piece of music, creating a unique, immersive experience that is described as “a concert you can move through.” Event is free, but registration is required due to limited capacity and possible program changes.

Requiem: Fire in the Air of the Earth

Visionary choreographer and MacArthur Fellow Kyle Abraham and pioneering producer/electronic music composer Jlin have come together to create a reimagining of Mozart’s Requiem in D Minor through abstracted themes of afterlife, reincarnation, mythology, and folklore.

In collaboration with costume designer Giles Deacon, and lighting and set designer Dan Scully, ten dancers from Abraham’s company—A.I.M by Kyle Abraham—take the stage to the music of Jlin, who has transformed Mozart’s score into an electronic opus that memorializes ritual and rebirth.

On October 15 CAAM CDT launches its 30th anniversary season with a brand new production at the O’Shaughnessy celebrating Mid-Autumn Moon Festival.

Invite the Moon to Dance – a live in-person event of CAAM Chinese Dance Theater – invites not only our Chinese dance community to ‘dance with the moon,’ but also many more amazing local artists! To share this auspicious performance, CAAM CDT has invited world-reknown pipa artist Gao Hong and her Chinese instrument orchestra, Katha Dance Theater and their professional company, as well as select dancers from St. Paul Ballet, featuring choreography of Helen Hatch.

With original choreography of Jinyu Zhou, CAAM CDT’s Artistic Director, set on CAAM CDT’s dancers, and featuring solo performances by Ao (Aloe) Liu, a choreographer/dancer for Walker Art Center’s 2022 Choreographers’ Evening. After performing professionally as a soloist for 8 years in Yang Liping Dance Company, (also known as the “Peacock Queen” in China, Ao Liu continued to perform and choreograph professionally in China until she joined CAAM Chinese Dance Theater in 2022.

Celebrate 35 years of Young Dance! Play and build community at the Fall Fling on Saturday, October 15 from 3:00–6:00pm.

This outdoor celebration is fun for the whole family! Enjoy performances and interactive demonstrations by Young Dance, CAAM Chinese Dance Theater, Smiling Drum, St. Paul Ballet, and Youth Performance Company. Visit the family-friendly makers’ market including addis, NordEast Cookie Co., and more! Play games, blow bubbles, make art, eat cake, dance, and more.

We will provide audio description and an ASL interpreter. Parking is wheelchair accessible and seating will be available. Individuals with and without disabilities regularly engage with the organizations at the Fairview Business Center. We value access and continue working to improve our programming and space to meet people’s needs better. Please let us know if any other accommodations are needed to participate in this event. 

Activities will be outdoors, but in the event of rain, the event will continue inside at each partner’s location.

As we continue to innovate in the field of dance – the art form of touch and breath – James Sewell Ballet shares a program with breath and exchange at its center. Take it in and let it fill you up.

Special guest Xina combines her dance and music savvy to co-create a piece blending art-pop and spiritual sensibilities – no formula, just boundless creativity. Michael Walters returns with brand new choreography after astonishing and energizing audiences with his JSB New Works Project ’22 premiere. Arimee Gambill, in her fifth season as a company dancer, debuts a work that combines rapture with decay.

What happens at the intersection of total rhapsody and utter nihilism? Rounding out the program is a restaging of Sewell’s Grey (2018), with mesmerizing moves swirling to selections from Ukrainian world-music quartet DakhaBrakha.

Geared to first-time audiences of all ages, including infants, this 60-minute performance of excerpts from the company’s regular season repertoire promises to delight! There will be no intermission, and house lights will remain partially lit so that audience members may come and go as needed.
