Sarah is interested in sensory exploration, movement as meditative practice, and better understanding the body’s instinctual knowledge. This class will center physical sensation and individual vigor. Improvisation and set phrase work will be used to engage the senses and harness athleticism with a focus on curiosity and aliveness.

Sarah McCullough (she/her) is a Minneapolis-based movement artist and educator. Originally from Virginia, she earned her BA in Dance and Mathematics from James Madison University. Since moving to Minnesota in 2018, she has performed with Black Label Movement, ARENA DANCES, Alexandra Bodnarchuk, HoneyWorks, Hatch Dance, and more. As an educator, she has been invited to offer classes at the Limon/ Black Label Twin Cities Intensive, ARENA DANCES’ Instinct Intensive, The University of Winchester (UK), North Carolina State University, as well as several high school dance programs throughout the Twin Cities. Sarah seeks out physically rigorous and deeply authentic dance experiences through performance, creation, and education.

The Arena – Contemporary Flow with Mathew Janczewski

Fridays: Contemporary Flow with Mathew Janczewski
10:00-11:30am at The Arena, through November 18.
Pre-register here!
Drop-in rate is $17 with flexible pricing. Free parking on side streets: Aldrich, Bryant, Colfax, 31st, etc.

Class focuses on opening up curiosity and finding internal pathways within the body and the contrast of those same pathways. An assortment of texture, speed, density, length, force and resistance will be taught to open these skills.

Mathew’s work as Artistic Director of ARENA DANCES is best described as contemporary, spanning an array of styles – from quietly evocative to physically demanding, full of spiraling momentum that draws energy into the core and spreads it out like disco ball beams of light. At times, movement focuses on the dancers’ bends and folds, creating shape as one shifts and moves, forging moments of connection.

The Arena – GYROKINESIS® Method with Non Edwards

The GYROKINESIS® Method offers exercises rooted in full-body movement that builds skill in coordination and proprio/interoception. Exercises can be performed seated on an armless chair or stool, standing, and on hands and knees. We will work on the seven spinal movements, joint articulation, and cultivating strength with coordinated breath while transitioning through sequences with fluidity. Gyrokinesis addresses the entire body, opening energy pathways, stimulating the nervous system, increasing range of motion, and creating functional strength through rhythmic, flowing movement sequences.

Mondays, 5:00pm-6:00pm
At the Arena, through November 15.
$17 suggested drop-in, pay as able. Free parking on side streets.
Pre-register at: https://www.arena-dances.org/the-arena/
