Rhythmically Speaking Presents The Cohort 2022: Stage

A reimagining of RS’ long-running annual August production, The Cohort is built to support and share different perspectives on and via the vibrancy of jazz and American social dance ideas, now through both staged and screened works. This year’s stage production The Cohort 2022 features work by:

Rae Charles – Local Artist and RS Company Member
Kathleen Doherty – Visiting Artist from Halifax, NS Canada
Erinn Liebhard – RS Artistic and Executive Director
Laura Ann Smyth – Visiting Artist from Los Angeles, CA

Charles’ new piece Learning to Understand uses the metaphor of falling in love to explore how we come to understand ourselves and one another. Visiting Artist Kathleen Doherty is remounting her work BASS-line, which takes inspiration from how prominent bass lines within music influence movement choices, rhythmic timing and shapes in the dancers’ bodies. Liebhard’s new work An Opening is a musing on the synergy of keeping it together and breaking apart, and Visiting Artist Laura Smyth is setting her work Character A/Musings, using the jazz idiom to consider the way in which we invent and reinvent ourselves throughout our lifetimes. We are thrilled to return to our long-time summer home of the Southern Theater for the following show times:

Thursday, August 11 at 7:30pm
Friday, August 12 at 7:30pm – talk-back following the show
Saturday, August 13 at 2:00pm – pay as you are
Saturday, August 13 at 7:30pm

To learn more about this production, the film screening that is a part of The Cohort program, and Rhythmically Speaking, visit rhythmicallyspeakingdance.org. See you at the show!

An assortment of texture, speed, density, length, force and resistance will be taught to open these skills. The Moving Practice class will differ from Mathew’s regular Contemporary Flow class by investigating, through improvisation, one’s body in space – inviting stillness, invisibility, and listening to your weight falling through space.

Originally from Illinois, dancer, choreographer, director, and creative Mathew Janczewski (he/him) has been residing in Minneapolis, MN since 1989. He was a company member, most notably with Shapiro & Smith Dance from 2007-2014 and JAZZDANCE! By Danny Buraczeski from 1992-97. As a dancer, Mathew has performed as a guest with the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company, Bebe Miller, and Jacek Luminski of Bytom, Poland. Over the years, he has performed the works of Beth Corning, Sean Curran, HIJACK, Marge Maddux, Shawn McConneloug, Jane Shockley, Robin Stiehm, Morgan Thorson, Doug Varone, and Cathy Young.

Balance, Stability, and Breath with Sarah Baumert

The lessons in this two-hour workshop will help improve a wide variety of functional movements, focusing on easier balance, effortless standing, and ease-filled graceful walking. We will explore in various positions including lying on the back, side, belly, and in standing.

Humans are designed to be upright in gravity. This is the human brain’s primary job – to balance and organize the body to be upright in gravity during all functional activities. Standing up on your two little feet might seem automatic and something you don’t think about too much, but this vital process of balancing keeps your brain very occupied! We will finesse our relationship to gravity, becoming more sensitive, responsive, and supple in our upright position.

This workshop is appropriate for all levels. It will help improve walking, running, dancing, jumping, and whatever your favorite functional movement is.

We are all quite different. Our attention spans and nervous systems have changed. But all of our brains have plasticity and we can form new habits yet again. We will lay on the floor together. We will orient ourselves to what it’s like to learn with others in the same room. We will get to know our feet in a novel way and experience how to find ease being upright in gravity. This workshop will only be offered in person.

Tuesday, August 9, 4:00-6:00pm
Space is limited. Pre-register to reserve your space.
There will be time for discussion and questions following the movement portion of the class.
BYOP – Bring Your Own Props
After registration you will receive an email from Sarah with the props that will be needed for this class.

This workshop will take place at the Threads Dance Center. Conveniently located in the Seward Neighborhood, Threads offers free parking and free side street parking, is a 5 minute walk from the Franklin Light Rail Station, and a 2-5 minute walk from nearest bus stops (lines 2, 9, 22, 67).

Proof of vaccination status or negative test requested. Minimum 6 participants; maximum 25 participants for live workshop. If cost is a barrier, please reach out to Sarah directly for pay-what-you-can options. Beginners to Feldenkrais are welcome!
