Young Dance Board of Directors Present a Menu of Great Gatherings

As part of the spring fundraising campaign, the Young Dance Board of Directors will offer multiple events for donation. Select one – or many – of the gatherings from the menu to join in the fun!

Virtual Pilates Mat Class
April 30, 10:00–11:00am
Join an all levels mat Pilates class led by Abby Frank Taylor! We will go through a series of gentle movements and build some heat as we go. Modifications and support will be provided throughout using things you can find around your house. Zoom link sent upon registration. Suggested donation $10-20/person

Dance Celebration
May 15, 4:00–6:00pm
Following the final Young Dance Spring Performance, celebrate with an opportunity to dance together! Paul McCluskey will lead an Irish Ceili dance experience. Suggested donation $5-10/person

Learn to make goat cheese from home with Soph Myers-Kelley! Impress friends and family with simple skills and in less than an hour. Zoom link sent upon registration. Suggested donation $20/person

Grammy Award-winning ensemble Third Coast Percussion and the groundbreaking choreography team Movement Art Is have joined forces to create an irresistible dance-music mashup that melds the captivating urgency of street dance with a fiery score of percussive invention and other-worldly electronic soundscapes.

Two disparate styles of street dance blend seamlessly with new music by Jlin and Tyondai Braxton, as well as Third Coast Percussion’s critically-acclaimed arrangements of Philip Glass’s Aguas da Amazonia.

This event will be captioned, with other accessibility services available upon request.

ARENA DANCES’ Sixth Annual CANDY BOX Dance Festival

CANDY BOX, presented by Mathew Janczewski’s ARENA DANCES is an annual, eclectic gathering of performances, masterclasses, and work-in-progress showings. This year’s festival features a range in levels of experiences, aesthetics, and choreographic voices to offer a diverse array of treats!

Sensible Existence: A Project Choreographed by Marcus Jarrell Willis

Join us as TU Dance returns with live performances at The O’Shaughnessy featuring the expanded, evening-length presentation of Sensible Existence, a TU Dance project originally choreographed by award winning choreographer Marcus Jarrell Willis in 2017. Sensible Existence is a dance work inspired by Descartes’ writings on Self and the World. The work explores the questions surrounding its namesake. Existence is the fact or state of living or having objective reality. Sensible is an adjective describing something that is done in accordance with wisdom or prudence. The new Sensible Existence will draw from its original production elements and will feature new writing compositions uniquely crafted to this work.

Analog Dance Works Presents Tellus

After postponing for two years due to the pandemic, Analog Dance Works presents its inaugural event, Tellus. Two premiere dance works bring the company’s commitment to the exploration of the intersection of dance and science to the pressing theme of climate change, moving from Minnesota backyards by means of whitetail deer to a broad look at the psychological effects of the global crisis. These choreographies are accompanied by an interactive exhibit from the University of Minnesota’s Outreach through Science and Art Group that reveals the science behind the art. The theater becomes a laboratory as Tellus embraces experimentation and play, investigating the rapid shifts shaping the world today.

Riverside Park Sound Garden

Dancers Sarah Baumert, Suzette Gilreath, Erika Hansen, Megan Mayer and Leslie O’Neill perform in a new, site-specific Sound Garden installation at Riverside Park. This premier performance directed by composer JG Everest will also feature poetry by Chavonn Shen, Nimo Farah, Teresa Ortiz and many more.

The Riverside Park Sound Garden event is a free, family-friendly, self-guided event that features a sound installation of 50+ small, wireless speakers, distributed throughout a section of the park, with live accompaniment by roving musicians and dancers, and live poetry and site-specific visual art. Each small speaker is playing a different part of the whole piece of music, creating a unique, immersive experience that is described as “A Concert You Can Move Through”.

This activity is part of the Peoples Center & Clinics’ “Because Your Health Matters” community wellness initiative in partnership with Wavelets Creative.

Off-Leash Area presents Off-Kilter Cabaret

Seven artists share their captivating takes on the theme “Organ Recital” in the Off-Kilter Cabaret! Using dance, storytelling, theater, spoken word, puppetry, and performance, artists with disabilities explore the theme in wildly different ways, ranging from hilarious and thought-provoking to heart-breaking and profound.

ABOUT the PROGRAM: Off-Kilter is Off-Leash Area’s new cabaret performance program designed to highlight and support artists with disabilities, which makes space for and gives voice to artists with disabilities in the design and leadership of the program. Curated by the Off-Kilter Leadership Group, the inaugural year is organized around the theme “Organ Recital.” This year Off-Leash Area is excited to partner with Young Dance, whose mission is transforming lives through movement.

Performances: June 9, 10, 11 at 7:30pm, June 12 at 2:00pm. Friday night performance will be followed by a Q&A with the artists.

COVID PROTOCOLS: Audience will be required to show proof of vaccination at the door. We will provide physically distanced seating and require participants to wear masks as they are able, and otherwise follow CDC and State guidelines at the time of the performances.

Zenon Dance School – Hip Hop Workshop with Gabby “The Baddie” Abram

Gabby “The Baddie” Abram teaches a limited workshop series in All Levels Hip-Hop this spring at Zenon Dance School!

This class is open to all levels! Class material is tailored to the mix of students!

Gabrielle Abram is a Gary, Indiana native, and a 2020 Momentum New Dance Works fellow. She is a self-taught, multi-lingual Hip Hop artist and has received training in Ballet, Modern, West African, and Jazz at The Perpich Center for Arts and Education, TU Dance Center, and received a scholarship to attend the ARENA Dances Summer Intensive. Abram attended Columbia College Chicago for one year then returned to the Twin Cities to work as a professional Dancer, Choreographer, and Producer. Gabrielle is a member of STRONGmovement, directed by Darrius Strong, and Atlantis13 Dance Collective, directed by Peace Madimutsa and Johnathan Van Arman. In 2018 Abram co-produced Listen at The Lab Theater, a collective of nine choreographers sharing Pan-African perspectives and personal stories of black identity. Abram continues to produce, dance, and create work in the Twin Cities.

Sensual Bachata Four-Week Series

Join local professional dancers Erika Cianciaruso and Kagan Ford for a four-week Sensual Bachata series.

This will be a progressive class that deep dives into technique and body mechanics. We’ll cover foundations, musicality, styling and patterns fit for new and experienced dancers alike. No partner needed.
