Studio Stories: Reminiscing on Twin Cities Dance with Lindalee Soderstrom

Join ARENA DANCES for our weekly Studio Stories podcast, where each week we reminisce on Twin Cities dance history with a new special guest. This week, we hear from Lindalee Soderstrom.

Lindalee is a graduate of Carleton College with a bachelor of arts in modern dance and voice in 1972. A former student at Dance Studio Margret Dietz, she co-authored Margaret Dietz – A Dancers Legacy.

Free bodyART® Classes at Hothouse

Join movement teachers Christina Redondo and Alexa Lautenbach for a special movement practice! Christina and Alexa are partnering up to bring you bodyART® for FREE for the course of three sessions. Welcome in the new year with something different.

bodyART® is a physical therapy based movement system that focuses on injury prevention, pain reduction and sustainable longevity. A non-religious, fully-functional training system, specifically designed to improve strength, cardiovascular endurance, joint mobility and achieve holistic balance, physically, psychologically and emotionally.

This class is open to all experiences and encourages anyone from professional dancers to new comers to movement. Class is practiced barefoot and on a mat. We hope to see you there!

Classes are located at Hothouse NE in the Kennedy Building located on the 4th floor. Free parking on site.

Pop-Up WINTER Sound Garden on West River Parkway

Dancers Leslie O’Neill, Megan Mayer, Sarah Baumert, and Erika Hansen perform their site-specific, roving, durational movement scores across a three-acre site along West River Parkway as part of composer/director JG Everest’s immersive WINTER Sound Garden sound and performance installation event. With a parallel performance score by SuperGroup.

The roving movement scores will begin by 1:00pm and will come and go throughout the space until 3:00pm.

The fourth of four seasonal “pop-up” Sound Garden events along West River Parkway in 2021-22, the WINTER Sound Garden features layers of site-specific dance, music, poetry, and visual art among some of the oldest trees in Minneapolis, on the bluff above the Mississippi River.

Sound Gardens are designed as durational, self-guided experiences intended for audience to connect more meaningfully to a particular place and the natural world. The spatial sound score and live dance and musical elements are meant to accompany the sounds and physical elements that are already there – the birds, the trees, the wind, the shadows, the sunlight, the snow. Audiences are encouraged to both circulate and linger at their own pace, following their own impulses for what to pay attention to.

Threads Dance Nexus Winter Session Classes

Registration is now open for the Winter Session at Threads Dance Nexus!

Classes begin January 24, 2022 and include:

Women from around the world! Please join us for a worldwide duet dance, connecting and attuning to each other across the globe.

Sign up and find a partner, learn the two-minute dance through Zoom, and record yourselves on February 2, 2022!

Rent the Young Dance Studios

Young Dance has two large studios available for rent in the Midway neighborhood of Saint Paul. Easily accessible by the Green Line light rail, the 16 and 67 Bus Lines, and with ample parking in the Fairview Business Center parking lot. The space is fully ADA accessible with ramps to the sprung studio floor and automatic door openers. 

Rentals are available between the hours of 9:00am-3:00pm Monday through Friday, after 4:00pm on Saturday, and all day on Sundays. 

The studios are newly equipped with sprung Harlequin Marley flooring, a bluetooth speaker system, and wifi. There are no mirrors. The studio has a clear COVID safety plan including regular disinfecting of all floors and surfaces, as well as a new HVAC system which refreshes the air 7-8 times per hour. Renters will also have access to a large lobby (25’ x 29’) and up to 50 chairs.

Studio 2: Measures 38′ x 38′ and rents at $20/hour

Soulfood Sessions with Aneka McMullen

Join Young Dance Artist-In-Residence Aneka McMullen and collaborator Tamiko French for this four-part series, Soulfood Sessions, exploring pranayama breathwork and sound bath meditation. 

Saturdays, January 15, 22, 29, and February 5
5:00–6:30 p.m.
Cash donations for the artists accepted.

The mission of Soulfood Sessions is to supercharge the mind, body, and spirit. This practice utilizes breathwork, sound healing, and movement meditation while targeting the chakras (internal energy centers of the body) to relieve the stress of daily life and clear internal energy blockages. During the series, we will build community and gather tools to help ourselves and each other recharge mental, physical, and spiritual health during pandemic times and beyond.

Ages 7+
No experience necessary.

Vaccination or negative PCR test within 72 hours required. Masks required.

Participation in all four sessions is encouraged.

Modern Dance with Rae Charles Harge

  • Youth Modern for ages 11-13

Rae is a local choreographer, scholar, and dance educator in the Twin Cities.

Currently working on a Ph.D. in Dance Education at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, she is dedicated to advocating for racial equity both on the stage and in the classroom. She has taught at numerous preeminent studios, schools, and colleges including Carleton College, Macalester College, University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, the Performing Institue of Minnesota, and Summit Dance Shoppe.

Charles Harge is a graduate of New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts and the University of Michigan. She locates her own choreography at the intersection of jazz and modern and is greatly influenced by her work with artists and companies in New York as well as Minnesota including Jawole Willa Jo Zollar and Maria Bauman or Urban Bush Women, MBDance, Robert Battle, Camille A. Brown, Ron K. Brown, Karen L. Charles/Threads Dance Project, David Dorfman, Alonzo King, Rhythmically Speaking, Sydney Skybetter, and Kate Weare.

Dance Theatre of Harlem

The 17-member, multi-ethnic company performs a forward-thinking repertoire that includes treasured classics, neoclassical works, and innovative contemporary works that use the language of ballet to celebrate African American culture.

This program includes the Northrop co-commission Higher Ground, with choreography by Robert Garland and music by Stevie Wonder, Balamouk choreographed by Annabelle Lopez Ochoa with music by Les Yeux Noirs, and Passage choreographed by Claudia Schreier with a commissioned score by Jessie Montgomery.

Audition for Off-Leash Area’s Production of Minotaur

The dance audition for Off-Leash Area’s 2022 mainstage production, Minotaur, will be held in a workshop format. We are looking for three additional dancers who have previous experience with or show proclivity towards embodying Theatrical Mask work, strong contemporary/modern dance skills, and strong musicality using complex rhythms. 

We are looking to create a cast that expresses a range of ages and gender identities.​

Positions are paid a $1000 stipend.

Anticipated rehearsals are twice weekly beginning at the end of February through mid-May, thrice weekly mid-May through July.

Tech and Performance Dates are July 11-17, 2022.
Performance venue is Barbara Barker Center for Dance, Minneapolis.
