James Sewell Ballet: Master Class with Graham Lustig of Oakland Ballet

Join Graham Lustig, artistic director of Oakland Ballet Company, for a ballet master class, available to participants thanks to a partnership between Northrop and James Sewell Ballet. This class is for intermediate/advanced level dancers and will bring focus to placement, musicality, and expression.

Since his appointment as Artistic Director in 2010, Graham Lustig has revitalized Oakland Ballet Company and helped the organization reclaim its position as a leading San Francisco Bay Area arts institution and premier dance company. Lustig’s stewardship has brought the company a reputation for presenting community-based programming that makes the art of dance relevant, accessible, and engaging to the diverse community Oakland Ballet serves.

make : magnify Interdisciplinary Arts Festival

make : magnify is an interdisciplinary arts festival hosted along the West Bank Arts Quarter of the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus. This festival was created by university dance students. Admission is free, but donations are accepted and encouraged to support both the project and individual artists. 

Artists were brought together in groups of 2-3 individuals of varying disciplines with the purpose of creating a new work within a 2-week residency period. These groups are made up of both student and community artists. Each of the three works vary in length from 15-25 minutes. 

The nature of this festival is that it travels between West Bank buildings and locations. Following the performances, there will be a reception in the Barbara Barker Center for Dance lobby with food, drinks, and a chance to mingle with the artists.

Pointed Humor features the highly-anticipated choreographies of two guest choreographers and old friends of the company. Shohei Iwahama (former James Sewell Ballet dancer and current member of Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo) brings an expansive group work that emanates curiosity, play, and kinship. Michael Walters returns with his fourth choreographic commission for James Sewell Ballet with a passionate duet, at moments both gritty and gentle.

This remarkable evening includes two Sewell works: a new sextet that blends classical and contemporary ballet within Bach’s Concerto for Violin & Oboe; and a remount of Doo-Be-Doo, which combines high-energy playful antics with stunning technical feats.

Threads Youth Dance Sampler

Join us for a morning of movement and mindfulness at Threads Dance Sampler! Youth ages 8-12 can sample a ballet, modern, and nutrition class, and enjoy an hour of mindfulness in a gratitude and resilience workshop.

Paid Bodystorming Event April 17

Calling all dancers and/or scientists! Come join Black Label Movement with UMN Biomedical Engineer David Odde and his cancer research lab in a Bodystorming session.

Bodystorming is a rapid modeling technique using bodies, space, and choreographic strategies.
Participating dance artists receive $27.50/hour and parking reimbursement.

Minnesota Dance Theatre Seeks School Director

Minnesota Dance Theatre (MDT) seeks a strategic and collaborative school director, a cross-cutting leader who will work within and among a faculty of dance teachers, three direct reports, and MDT’s Board of Directors.

MDT is an acclaimed dance school based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Founded by Loyce Houlton in 1962, MDT ranks as one of the most enduring arts organizations and aspires to maintain the highest international artistic standards, while attracting audiences, dancers, and students from all cultural and economic backgrounds.

The School Director will play an active leadership role within the organization as an operational and artistic school leader, as well as in the community, engaging deeply with donors and the dance community. They will develop and implement a ballet curriculum and strategies that grow the power and artistry of dancers.

This opportunity is a full-time, exempt position with a competitive compensation package. Salary range: $70k – $80k.

MotionArt Presents Reel Imaginings

Join us for Reel Imaginings, a presentation of short films created by MotionArt director/choreographer Pam Gleason in collaboration with cinematographers Guy Wagner, Nate Gebhard, Adam Tapper, and the many multi-generational movers of MotionArt! Whether exploring humor in the mundane, suspending disbelief in unfolding absurdities, or meandering down a waterway, these films offer a fun and captivating viewing experience for people of all ages.

Total film time: 70 minutes. Informal reception following the films. Refreshments and special treats provided by Little Bettina’s.

Broadway Dancin’ – Collide Theatrical

One weekend only! Collide Theatrical Dance Company presents Broadway Dancin’ at the Luminary Arts Center on April 20 and 21.

In this high-energy cabaret, Collide dancers will take you on a journey through a celebration of New York City and Broadway. The show will feature numbers from some of your favorite Broadway hits, including West Side Story, Sweet Charity, A Chorus Line, and more!

Join us as we explore some of the most influential dance musicals that helped shape Broadway’s history.
