Swing dancing is back at Tapestry Folkdance Center featuring Beasley’s Big Band on the third Thursday of the month.

Thursday, September 16
6:30-7:15pm: Lesson
7:15-10:15pm: Dance

Beasley’s Big Band is a “classic” big band (18 members) that plays music from the 40’s-60’s, popularized by such greats as Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller, and others. Founded in 1991 by North Minneapolis jazz legend Chuck Beasley, the band’s library was custom arranged by Chuck. Unfortunately we lost Chuck to cancer eight years ago – but his legacy of great jazz lives on.

This year, we are offering two different tracks for dancers 7 and older: our Academy Program and our NEW Pre-Professional Program. Both the Pre-Professional and Academy programs will be taught by our exemplary faculty and continue to give your dancer the highest quality professional training available today, in a focused, safe, and healthy environment.

Our Academy program is for students age seven and older. This program follows an elementary through advanced/intermediate ballet syllabus, and includes modern/contemporary, preparation for pointe, performance/musical theater jazz, an elite solos/variations class, and pointe classes for the higher levels. All levels include repertoire training, in which students learn choreography and dances. New students with prior dance training seeking to enter Youth Ballet 1 or higher are required to have a personal evaluation by the school faculty for placement.

Our new Pre-Professional Program provides a more rigorous and demanding training schedule, designed for students ages 7-21 striving towards a professional or post-secondary dance career. Admission to the Pre-Professional Program and our Professional Division are by audition and invitation only.
