This program is offered in a hybrid format, with both in-person and online options for participation.

5th Annual CANDY BOX Dance Festival – Performances, Masterclasses, and More

CANDY BOX Dance Festival is an annual, eclectic gathering of performances, work-in-progress showing, master classes, and choreographic discussions. A one-of-a-kind event in the Twin Cities, the fifth annual festival features a range of aesthetics and choreographic voices to offer a diverse array of treats! The Festival’s three main features include Featured Artists’ Performance, Happy Hour Artists’ Showings, and Master Classes.

MotionArt Adult Modern Dance Classes

MotionArt’s mission is to share the art of dance and the joy of movement with people of all ages and abilities. We strive to enrich lives by fostering creativity, body awareness and self-expression in a fun, non-competitive, welcoming environment.

We offer ongoing dance classes on Zoom and outside (weather permitting) and will begin offering in-studio classes mid-July. Paying the regular rate helps keep our organization afloat; however, no one will be turned away for inability to pay. There is also an option to pay what you can.

EURYDICE presented by Vox Medusa with Infiammati FireCircus

Critically acclaimed Vox Medusa with Infiammati FireCircus breathes new life into this time honored dilemma with their EURYDICE. EURYDICE is a three-night outdoor production forged in music, dance, fire, and video and film environments set at the beautiful Target Stage on Harriet Island on the banks of the Mississippi in St. Paul.

What, or who would you sacrifice to achieve eternal greatness?

EURYDICE is a reimagining of the Orpheus myth from his mysterious wife’s viewpoint of her harrowing journey. Follow Eurydice’s epic odyssey over land and sea, through true love, death and a fiery underworld in order to discover herself not just as a muse of Orpheus, but as her own inspiration for rebirth.

EURYDICE is a collaborative creation born of Vox Medusa’s provocative contemporary dance choreographed by Kristin Freya, powerful original electronic music by Jeremy Christensen and moving vocal score by Emily Colay, potent spoken word by Desdamona Ross, breathtaking fire performance of  Infiammati FireCircus choreographed by Rah Diavola, stunning video environments and dynamic light design by Tony Biele and cinematic film debut by Jeremy Christensen and Vox Medusa.

Social Distanced Outdoor Seating
Ample audience area for socially distanced seating is available on both flat ground for chairs and raked hillside for blanket seating. Please note: All audiences should bring their own blankets or camp chairs for personal seating.

Two ample parking lots are located next to the Target Stage. Restrooms in close walking distance.

Moving Practice is a weekly class series for professional dancers. As a collective, we aim to offer classes that prioritize rigor, diversity of contemporary aesthetics, variety of class content, and commitment. Professional level dancers of all styles are welcome

Modern/Contemporary Movement Class with Laura Selle Virtucio will lean into joy, flow, and dynamic disruption. Classes will utilize set patterns and improvisational strategies to prepare for the embodiment of culminating phrase work.

Threads Dance Nexus: Rent Our Space

Our 1,480 square foot space has a professional grade speaker sound system, sprung floors, barres and mirrors, is ADA compliant, and has two gender neutral changing rooms. Its large windows and garage door allow for an abundance of natural light and fresh air.

A new ventilation system and thorough cleaning between each use are compliant with guidelines for Covid-19 preparedness plans. Face coverings are required at all times and our maximum studio capacity is ten people, to allow for adequate distancing.

Conveniently located in the Seward neighborhood, we offer free parking and free side street parking. We are a five-minute walk from the Franklin Light Rail Station, and a 2-5 minute walk from nearest bus stops (lines 2, 9, 22, 67).

A nonrefundable deposit equal to one hour at the renter’s base rate is due to secure space.

Threads Dance Project Seeks Dancers for Fall Programming – Register to Audition

Threads Dance Project is seeking an ethnically diverse group of dancers ages 21 and older. Men, women, and gender fluid dancers encouraged to apply. Threads is seeking versatile dancers that are quick learners and are fluent in a variety of dance forms. Rehearsals begin August 9, 2021.

Highlighting our CANDY BOX Dance Festival Artists in Studio Stories Podcast

Join ARENA DANCES for our weekly Studio Stories Podcast, where each week we reminisce on Twin Cities dance history with a new special guest. The next several weeks we are airing a special series, featuring artists that will premiere new work at our CANDY BOX Dance Festival July 12-16! This week we sat down with Annika Hansen and Abigail Whitmore – one of the festival’s Happy Hour Artists.

Abigail Whitmore (she/her) and Annika Hansen (they/them, she/her) are dance artists and partners invested in collaborative efforts, performative events, and dance as embodied research. Both graduates of the University of Minnesota Dance Program, they draw inspiration from somatic practices, improvisation, post-modern, and contemporary dance forms. In their work together, they have partnered with Glam Doll Donuts with the support of a UROP grant (You’re Invited, 2016), the Casket Arts Building (Casket Dances, 2018), and the Walker Art Center (SculpTour, 2018/2019) to produce public dance events and experiment with audience engagement. Most recently, they were collaborating artists on a piece (To and From:) for the Red Eye Theater’s Works in Progress 2019 program. This year they are also planning another SculpTour event in the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden. 

Studio Stories will air each Thursday at noon with new guests joining the host to reminisce and share their memories and history with our dance scene.

Seeking One to Three Dancers – Paid Performance Project

Seeking one to three dancers for a new multimedia performance project, Ashwini Ramaswamy’s Invisible Cities.

Commissioned by The Great Northern Festival and The Cowles Center. Creative residency partner: The National Center for Choreography in Akron, OH.

Ashwini Ramaswamy’s Invisible Cities is a large-scale reimagining of Italo Calvino’s metaphysical/philosophical novel. With Invisible Cities, she deepens a unique choreographic methodology anchored in the South Indian classical dance form of Bharatanatyam and collaboratively reinterpreted by dancers of four distinct cultural backgrounds/dance lineages (Bharatanatyam, led by Ramaswamy; Contemporary/Gaga led by Berit Ahlgren; Contemporary/African Diasporic led by Alanna Morris-Van Tassel; and Breaking led by Joseph ‘MN Joe’ Tran).

Ashwini and Alanna are currently seeking one to three dancers for the Contemporary/African Diasporic group. Interested candidates must have a minimum of 10 years of dance experience. Ideal candidates are generative collaborators (enjoy making contributions through generating movement and ideas), imaginative, and move with spirit,  It is also important to note that since this is a long term commitment, Ashwini and Alanna are most interested in artists who desire to grow and deepen their craft with a group of collaborators over a period of time.

Important dates:
August 10-13, 2021: Introductory residency in Minneapolis
March 2022: Possible residency in Sheyboygan, WI
August 2022: Residency at the National Center for Choreography in Akron, OH
Fall 2022: rehearsals
January/February 2023: Premiere at the Cowles Center, possible touring afterwards

Please send video excerpts from 3-5 different dance works and a dance resume; if the excerpt is group choreography, please specify which dancer you are. Each clip should be a minimum of three minutes in length. Total video length should not exceed 20 minutes.

Studio Rentals

Need space to rehearse, choreograph, teach, or hold an event? Collide Theatrical has two studios available for rental in our beautiful St. Paul location.

Studio 1 has 1700 square feet of sprung floor, full wall-length mirrors, Rosco Adagio Marley dance floor, high ceilings, sky lights, and chandeliers. Studio 2 has 550 square feet of sprung wood floor.

Both studios have the following amenities:

  • Ballet barres for up to 18 students
  • Free and accessible parking and access to public transportation line
  • Gender-specific bathrooms (non-gender-specific bathroom available in the adjacent building)
  • Free Wi-Fi
  • Bluetooth room speakers
  • Cubbies for holding shoes and clothes
  • 2 long folding tables
  • Access to up to 30 folding chairs
  • HVAC heated and cooled spaces with temperature control
  • Hallway drinking fountains. Access to kitchenette area available upon request.

Single Rental:
Studio 1 – $30/hour
Studio 2 – $20/hour

Long-Term or Multiple Day Rental:
Studio 1 – $20/hour
Studio 2 – $15/hour

Weekly Rental Rate:
Payment for rental bookings must be made 48 hours prior to your booking to hold your reservation. A signed rental agreement and certificate of insurance must be provided prior to your reservation.
