Erin Thompson Teaches Advanced Contemporary Classes

A light-skinned dancer in her 60s tosses her arms in a curve to the left while she rises on her toes

Erin’s advanced level contemporary Zoom class through Zenon Dance School includes floor work, standing warm-ups, and phrase work, all designed to enhance the healthy use of joints and muscle groups as dancers release their weight fully into the support of the ground. Experiential awareness, body mapping, improvisation, and creative work are included as dancers channel their own expressive artistry within the movement. The delightful Dean Magraw will accompany on guitar.

Thursday mornings, 9:30-11:00am

NOTE – Classes will be in person and on Zoom starting this summer!

Registration is open through Zenon’s MindBody portal and closes ten minutes before class.
See you (virtually) soon!

Katha Dance Theatre Virtual Showcase

Katha Dance Theatre (KDT) has been teaching and performing Kathak, the North Indian classical dance form, for over three decades. Kathak is an elegant dance form characterized by rhythmic footwork, graceful hand gestures, pirouettes, lyrical movements, and storytelling. Since December of 2020, KDT has been producing a monthly virtual showcase series that highlighted different class levels, showcased diverse expressions of Kathak, and even celebrated holidays like Diwali.

This final showcase highlights KDT’s apprentices and company dancers. The name of the showcase, “Tarana-Sargam,” comes from variations of Nritta, or pure Kathak dances that highlight abstract movement rather than storytelling. “Tarana-Sargam” will feature performances of these types of Nritta as well as a few words of gratitude from the KDT community.

The free event will premiere on Vimeo at midnight on May 28. It will run through May 30 before it is archived on KDT’s website.  Join us in celebration of our talented, dedicated and hard-working dance community!

Doushin Butoh Experience Workshop

This one-day workshop is for people who want a first-time experience of Doushin Butoh. The essence of Doushin Butoh is “resonance,” an experience beyond idea or concept that can only be felt. In this class, students are guided in simple repetitive movements that we call “conditioning.” As students you will be guided into a movement meditation and experience the connection between your body, mind, and the universe.

Come and experience the power of Resonance!

Next Doushin Butoh Experience: Thursday, June 3, 6:30pm-8:00pm Central Time US

Tuition: $20

Collide Theatrical Dance Company Presents WONDERLAND

May 26-30 at the James J Hill House
June 5-20 at Mill City Museum

Join us in WonderLand, a premier psychiatric hospital. Dr. Knight has the difficult task of treating a man who refers to himself as a “White Rabbit” and suffers from a severe anxiety disorder, a young woman named Alice with body dysmorphia, and a Queen figure suffering from narcissistic rage.

As the doctor digs deeply into the causes and roots of their disorders he begins to ask: what does “normal” really mean?

Collide tells this story using its signature blend of high-energy dance styles set to a modern pop-rock soundtrack. The dance theater experience, created to suit safety requirements of COVID-19, will take the audience on a 70-minute ride into a compelling story of friendship and acceptance.

The production takes place outside at the James J Hill House and Mill City Museum. Virtual viewing option available.

SPRING Sound Graden at Harbor Park, Grand Marais

Composer / Director JG Everest returns to Grand Marais, MN to present his site-specific Spring Sound Garden sound and performance installation at Harbor Park on May 29 and 30 as part of the annual ART ALONG THE LAKE open gallery tour event. This self-guided, spatial “concert you can move through” was originally composed specifically for Harbor Park, and is being re-mounted to celebrate the 15-year anniversary of this special place with over 30 participating artists and collaborators.

The Spring Sound Garden features a temporary sound installation of 50 small, battery-powered remote speakers distributed throughout the park, each playing a different part of the larger piece of music, creating a multi-layered, immersive experience. The sound installation is accompanied live by the roving Free Range Orchestra & Choir, with a durational site-specific movement score by Minneapolis-based dancers Leslie O’Neill, Sarah Baumert, Megan Mayer, and Erika Hansen.

The Spring Sound Garden is the second installment of Everest’s four-part WATER SUITE: Four Seasonal Sound Gardens that first premiered in 2018, at four different outdoor locations around Minnesota. Each seasonal Sound Garden in the Water Suite was composed for one of the four seasons, and for a specific site that was on or adjacent to a significant body of water. As part of the SPRING Sound Garden event in 2021, Everest is also releasing a new album of the soundtrack, Harbor Park: A Spring Sound Garden, including site-specific stories and poems that were commissioned for the original event.

The Spring Sound Garden at Harbor Park is a family-friendly, free, outdoor event open to all ages and will take place from 12:00-5:00pm on Memorial Day weekend, both Saturday, May 29 and Sunday, May 30, 2021.

The Spring Sound Garden celebrates the coming of spring, the sacredness of water, and the history, geography, and ecology of Harbor Park and Lake Superior, and includes oral histories and archival photos, spotlighting the community of local volunteers and community members who brought the park into being.

The event will also feature visual art elements by local artists such as plein air oil painter Neil Sherman, muralist Mila Horak, art students from Cook County Middle School, and stories by storyteller Staci Lola Drouillard. Presented by Wavelets Creative in partnership with the Cook County Historical Society, Grand Marais Park Board, and Art Along The Lake / Visit Cook County.

This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
