JSB’s InProcess: Movement Workshop Series

December 18-21
11:30am-2:00pm
Join for today, tomorrow, or both!
Discounts apply for multiple days.

James Sewell Ballet hosts a movement workshop series geared toward adult dancers (18+) with intermediate/advanced technique who are:

  • Interested in “trying out” the movement vocabulary of various dance-makers.
  • Committing to their movement practice ahead of a holiday break.
  • Looking for a friendly creative environment without commitment to a long-term project.

Move with emerging leaders in the Twin Cities’ contemporary dance scene!
Featuring Javan Mngrezzo, Berit Ahlgren, Jarod Boltjes, and Elayna Waxse.

The goal of this series is pure process. The leaders get to see ideas actualized by movers in the room, and movers get to experience a single-day choreographic workshop with each leader.

Thursday and Friday: Heat Up December with AMP’S Winter Workshop

Move BIG while building awareness and exploring the expansive physicality possible in the body. Within an empowering environment, we will utilize improvised and structured movement vocabulary to research freedom, 3-D expansion, mobility, rigor, presence, choice-making, and agency. Led by AMP Director, Joanna Lees.

Suitable for professional, pre-professional, and/or intermediate/advanced movers, ages 18+. Knee pads recommended. This is a great way to keep moving over school or holiday breaks. Come as you are!

Two x Two

A collaboration of live music and dance, artists inspiring one another, exploring movement through sound and sound through movement.

Kid Villain (Alex Proctor) pairs with three passionate dancers from HoneyWorks led by Berit Ahlgren, and breathtaking musician Aby Wolf pairs with the commanding force of tap dancer Kaleena Miller.

Collaborations that each premiered earlier in 2023 now come together to be redefined and reinvestigated in a shared space.

About the Show
Wonderland is a theatrical dance production that aims to de-stigmatize mental health issues. Set in a psychiatric hospital, characters from Alice in Wonderland face challenges, explore what “normal” means, and share an uplifting story of empathy, acceptance, and friendship in the face of mental illness. The story is told using Collide’s signature blend of high-energy dance set to a pop-rock soundtrack.

TU Dance Center: Dancing Together Workshop

The Dancing Together Workshop is a child and parent/caregiver Creative Movement class. This 8-week workshop is designed for children ages 2-4 and their parent/caregiver who is interested in a shared movement experience that engages the senses of curiosity and play.

Both child and caregiver will participate in developmentally appropriate movement exercises that incorporate elements such as effort, shape, and tempo. Music will play an essential role in the class as students will be asked to respond to sounds as well as make sounds themselves. Participants will be encouraged to join at their comfort level with the understanding that observation is often the best form of learning with younger children. This class will give children and caregivers the opportunity to learn more about themselves and one another through the art form of dance.

Saturdays, 9:00-9:45am at TU Dance Center.

Application for make : magnify Multi-disciplinary Arts Festival

Calling for Twin Cities artists of all mediums interested in collaborative practice for a creation and performance opportunity!

A team from the University of Minnesota Dance Production class is producing a multi-disciplinary arts festival showing new works that will be made collaboratively. Our goal is to connect artists in the community in co-creation practices through residency periods. Movement artists with interest/experience in other mediums are encouraged to apply.

6-9 artists of various disciplines will be grouped in artistic partnerships of 2 or 3. Artists will be expected to create a multi-media work with their collaborators during a 2-week residency. These residencies will take place between March 11 and April 5 with a festival-style performance on April 13. Residency times are flexible. Twenty hours in a rehearsal space are guaranteed for each residency.

Applicants should have an interest in working with multiple disciplines, a desire to show original work, and a mind open to new ideas and processes!
