The Arena – Space for Rent

Located in the heart of the Lyn-Lake community, The Arena is available for your rehearsal, class, and event needs!

Hourly rates range from $15-$25, with discounts/special offerings available to BIPOC and LGBTQIA2+ communities.

Our space offers:

  • 1,305 square feet (30×40) of sprung, Marley dance flooring
  • Wall-length mirrors with curtains for covering if preferred
  • Changing room
  • Free parking on side streets (Aldrich, Bryant, Colfax, 31st, etc.)
  • Access to multiple bus lines, including the 21, 4, 23, 612, and 18

MotionArt Adult Modern Dance Classes

MotionArt’s mission is to share the art of dance and the joy of movement with people of all ages and abilities. We strive to enrich lives by fostering creativity, body awareness and self-expression in a fun, non-competitive, welcoming environment. We offer ongoing dance classes in-studio, on Zoom and outside (weather permitting).

Paying the regular rate helps keep our organization afloat; however, no one will be turned away for inability to pay. There is also an option to pay what you can.

MotionArt Children’s Summer Dance Classes

MotionArt is happy to offer children’s classes again! Children’s teacher, Kim Lewis, is excited to share her expertise and love of dance with children of all ages in the following classes:

Creative Dance for ages 3-5
Wednesdays, 9:30–10:15am
Two three-week sessions: June 14, 21, 28 and/or August 2, 9, 16
Cost: $35 per 3-week session – 3 classes

In these 3-week mini sessions, preschoolers explore dance concepts through playful, structured activities accompanied by acoustic instruments and a wide variety of music. Children expand their movement vocabulary, develop body awareness, and gain self-confidence in a fun, nurturing environment.

Creative Dance for ages 5-7
Mondays and Wednesdays, 10:30-11:30am
Two three-week sessions: June 12, 14, 19, 21, 26, 28 and/or August 7, 9, 14, 16, 21, 23
Cost: $75 per 3-week session – 6 classes

This class facilitates an understanding of the dance elements of Space, Time and Energy through improvised and structured activities. Children explore multiple concepts within these elements while practicing movement skills and enjoying new challenges. Students at this age begin to create their own dances and share them with their peers. No previous experience necessary.

Creative Dance/Introduction to Modern Dance for ages 8-11
Mondays and Wednesdays, 11:45am–1:00pm
Two three-week sessions: June 12, 14, 19, 21, 26, 28 and/or August 7, 9, 14, 16, 21, 23
Cost: $85 per 3-week session – 6 classes

In this class, students expand their creative potential and kinesthetic awareness as they explore a variety of concepts within the dance elements of Space, Time and Energy.  They are introduced to basic technical skills and movement vocabulary of Modern Dance and also have opportunities to improvise and create their own dances. No previous experience necessary.

MotionArt First Friday Improv Gathering

This event is open to people of all ages and abilities. Enjoy being present in the moment, responding to other dancers, finding new ways of moving, and discovering form as it emerges during this fun evening of creative movement. We’ll begin with an informal warm-up, then improvise together based on movement ideas offered by participants.

Come to move, to dance, to observe, or some of each!

Suggested donation $5-$15.
No one turned away for lack of funds.

Rent the Young Dance Studios

Young Dance has two large studios available for rent in the Midway neighborhood of Saint Paul. Easily accessible by the Green Line light rail, the 16 and 67 Bus Lines, and with ample parking in the Fairview Business Center parking lot. The space is fully ADA accessible with ramps to the sprung studio floor and automatic door openers.

Rentals are currently available:
Monday, Thursday, and Friday: 8:00am–9:00pm
Tuesday: 7:45–9:00pm
Wednesday: 7:15–9:00pm
Tuesday and Wednesday: 8:00am–3:30pm
Saturday: 3:00–9:00pm
Sunday: 8:00am–9:00pm

The studios are newly equipped with sprung Harlequin Marley flooring, a Bluetooth speaker system, and wifi. A projector with AV adapters is available by request. Studio 2 has ballet barres and a mirror. The studio has a clear COVID safety plan including regular disinfecting of all floors and surfaces and a new HVAC system that refreshes the air 7-8 times per hour.

Young Dance Offers Summer Classes and Camps

Young Dance is excited to announce Summer 2023 programming from June 6–August 31.

Creative Movement and Dance Together classes will be offered in 3 sessions, meeting once per week on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. We’re also offering camps for 4–7 year olds, or half-day and full-day camps for dancers ages 8–18.
Camp offerings include Music as Movement, Dance + Social Justice, Dance + Photography, Choreography, Dance a Story, All Abilities Dance + Stories, and a unique collection of dance styles in each Variety Dance Camp.

Junior Apprentice Auditions at Collide

Collide Theatrical is casting Jr. Apprentice Dancers for our fall production of The Great Gatsby at Luminary Arts Center, September 29-October 15, 2023.

Ages of 16-19.
Seeking technically trained dancers with excellent performance skills.
Rehearsals take place on Sundays in September and October.
This is an unpaid position. No participation fees required.

Collide Theatrical Apprentice Program

2023/2024 Apprentice Program, September 2023–May 2024

Collide Theatrical’s Apprentice Program provides the skills needed to pursue formal positions within the Collide company and in the world of theater dance.

Selected apprentice dancers will take technique class with the company 3–5 days a week, have an opportunity to perform in a Collide show, and participate in an Apprentice showcase at the end of the year.

The technical classes include a variety of styles rooted in ballet and jazz, but also including tap, acting for dance, and hip hop. Apprentice dancers will also have an opportunity to participate in monthly master classes with Broadway touring dance captains and industry professionals.

This is a tuition-based program.
Scholarships are available for underrepresented artists.
Enrollment is competitive and audition based.
Video submissions accepted.

Solo Perspectives

I (José A. Luis) seek to support, question, and offer space to/with two BIPOC and/or LGBTQ+ dance artists interested in solo exploration.

What is it?
An opportunity for two BIPOC and/or LGBTQ+ dance artists to be in a solo practice and inquire its meaning in relation to others. What is being offered:

  • 50 hours of free rehearsal space at MOVO
  • $600 stipend
  • A photography session
  • A public sharing
  • A malleable, dynamic opportunity to be, learn, and try
