Choreograph for Ballet Co.Laboratory

Apply to be Ballet Co.Laboratory’s 2024 Emerging Choreographer.

Ballet Co.Laboratory believes in the development of the whole dancer and works to invest in artists’ professional growth. Each season, through our Laboratory II: Emerging Choreographer Program, one choreographer is hired through this program to create a new, full-length, staged ballet production which is performed by the upper-level students at The School of Ballet Co.Laboratory (ages 11-20).

Choreographers applying to this program are encouraged to think critically about how ballet can continue to evolve in becoming more inclusive and forward-thinking. Rather than create a piece that is simply based on movement, artists are asked to create a production with a storyline that sparks the imagination and challenges the audiences’ perception of what ballet is. Choreographers are encouraged to expand upon the classic narrative by rethinking the characters, adding characters, or even reimagining the characters’ paths.

All applicants must live in Minnesota, have had formal ballet training, and consider themselves to be an emerging choreographer.

Off-Leash Area Call for Proposals for Next Off-Kilter Cabaret

Off-Leash Area announces an artist call for proposals for the second Off-Kilter Cabaret “Inside Outside Inside-Out”.

Off-Leash Area’s Off-Kilter community program highlights and supports artists with disabilities in creating original performance work. The second Off-Kilter Cabaret is an evening-length cabaret-style production comprised of 5 to 7 acts in any performing art form curated by the Off-Kilter Leadership Team – leaders in the disability community, two-thirds of whom are themselves persons with disabilities.

Performances will be held November 17-19 at the TEK Box at the Cowles Center for Performing Arts in downtown Minneapolis, a fully accessible black box theater with a floor-level stage. The event will include accessibility accommodations including ASL interpreting, captioning, and audio description.

The CFP opens June 1, and artists with disabilities are asked to submit proposals by the deadline of July 14 of a 5-to-10-minute original performance on the theme of “Inside Outside Inside-Out”. Off-Leash Area co-artistic director Jennifer Ilse says, “We want to prompt artists to propose risky, rebellious, and thought-provoking performances, informed by their own experience of being included or excluded, feeling within or outside of oneself, or even just discombobulated.”

The Off-Kilter Advisory Team is writer and storyteller Amy Salloway, arts accessibility consultant Jon Skaalen, national touring musician Gabriel Rodreick, and Sam Jasmine, host of the Disability and Progress program on KFAI. Off-Leash Area is excited to be partnering again with Young Dance, whose mission is:transforming lives through movement.”

National Taiwan University of Arts 2023 Tour

As part of their North America tour to celebrate the 2023 Taiwanese American Heritage Week, the music and dance performers from the National Taiwan University of Arts will give a dance and music performance focused on the innovative interpretation of traditional and modern Taiwanese dance and music on Wednesday, May 31 at 7:30pm at the Eisenhower Community Center Theater.

Introduction to the Program:
The intrinsic concept of the dances is based on the diverse culture of Taiwan which has gone through a history of immigration and colonization. With the utilization of innovative choreography, the dances combine the forms of dance and music that demonstrate the contemporary cultural features, ethnic cultures, and pop music of Taiwan. The traditional diverse culture is therefore exhibited with a whole new style. The performance is hosted in both Chinese and English in order to enhance the interaction with the audience. Click here for highlights of the performance in the past.

The ticket for the event is free, but you are welcome to make a donation of any amount by clicking the preceding link, through PayPal or Venmo, or making a cash donation at the theater entrance.

Floorwork: Conversations and Knowledge Sharing Potluck

Floorwork: a communal conversation and shared meal.

Every first Saturday! Floorwork was developed to hold conversations, knowledge sharing, and supportive space for dance artists and people who like to move.

The next Floorwork is:
Saturday, June 3
12:00-2:00pm – New Time!
RSVP by Thursday, June 1

This June Floorwork will focus on the question, “How do we improve our creative practice with thoughtful and critical feedback?” – conversation assisted by Arwen Wilder of Hijack. Conversation will be held over a communal meal – bring your own dish to share in our potluck! ARENA DANCES will supply beverages, plates, napkins, and utensils.

Critical Conversations – Technical and Production

Our next series of Critical Conversations will focus on the technical and production side of dance! These workshops are designed to provide a baseline for working with production teams and venues in Minnesota and abroad and to give artists the language to talk about tech. Come to one or both – the workshops are independent of one another and will be both presentation and conversation based amongst the panel and any artists attending. Both workshops are moderated by Cowles Co-Director (and Production Manager), Joseph Bingham, who will be joined by several panelists at each event. These discussions are free and open to all. Come to share your thoughts or just listen.

Building a Production Team
Tuesday, June 6, 6:00-8:00pm

Finding the right people for your creative project is paramount for success. Depending on the needs of your project, you may need a stage manager, production manager (no, the two aren’t always the same), lighting designer, sound designer, video designer, or more. Just like artists, different production folks have different aesthetics and ways of collaborating. Hear from several seasoned folks from these disciplines about their working styles, big-picture things you as a choreographer should consider when building out your team of collaborators, and the do’s and don’ts of tech week.

Putting Your Show in a Venue and Touring
Wednesday, June 7, 6:00-8:00pm
Whether you are producing a show at a local theater or touring, there are many factors, logistics, and ways of working and planning to consider. Venues with crew requirements versus those who just turn the keys over require different approaches when it comes to working with the venue’s production person or team. The technical elements of your work will require different planning depending on the venue and the people available to support it. This workshop brings seasoned production folks together to discuss how different venues locally and nationally require artists and production teams to plan. You’ll walk away knowing what to consider for your project.
