MotionArt’s mission is to share the art of dance and the joy of movement with people of all ages and abilities. We strive to enrich lives by fostering creativity, body awareness and self-expression in a fun, non-competitive, welcoming environment. We offer ongoing dance classes in-studio, on Zoom and outside (weather permitting).

Paying the regular rate helps keep our organization afloat; however, no one will be turned away for inability to pay. There is also an option to pay what you can.

FELDENKRAIS® Classes with Krista Langberg and Jeffrey Wells

In-person FELDENKRAIS Awareness Through Movement® classes with Krista Langberg and Jeffrey Wells.

Monday evenings, 6:00-7:00pm
Friday mornings, 9:00-10:00am

Drop in any time to our ongoing Monday evening and Friday morning classes at East Lake Aikido in the Longfellow neighborhood in Minneapolis.
With Krista Langberg or Jeffrey Wells, alternating weeks.
$10-25 sliding scale per class.

These classes are meant for anyone who is interested in deepening their self-awareness and possibilities of action, regardless of previous experience in the Feldenkrais Method. The space will be open 10 minutes before class begins. Please arrive 5-10 minutes early, especially if you are new to class, to sign in and familiarize yourself with the space. Wear comfortable clothes that are easy to move in – having a long-sleeve layer is helpful to adjust to temperature shifts. We provide blankets to practice on and any props needed for specific lessons.

Keane Sense of Rhythm Tap Classes

If you’ve ever thought, “I’ve always wanted to do that,” or, “I miss dancing,” you’ve come to the right place. Whether you have two left feet or blazing fast feet, we have a class for you!

At Keane Sense of Rhythm, students and professionals alike can share, grow, and explore rhythm and movement while having fun.

Our offerings include:

  • Tappy Hour 1, 2, 3, and 4
  • Dance Fit
  • On Broadway – Kids’ musical theater and tap
  • Rhythm Makers – Kids’ tap for ages 8-12
  • Youth Tap Ensemble – Intermediate and advanced training for kids interested in exploring the historical and professional world of tap dancing

Studio K, operated by Keane Sense of Rhythm, is a brand-new dance space built for percussive dance. Studio K features two studios with a lobby in the Creative Enterprise Zone in the Midway area of St. Paul.

Studio 1: 30’ x 34’ – 1020 square feet
Studio 2: 14’ x 20’ – 280 square feet

Individual artists: $12/$18 per hour

Studio Stories: CANDY BOX Edition with J’Sun Howard

Studio Stories podcast airs this Thursday, April 13 at noon with a special CANDY BOX Dance Festival conversation with featured artist, J’Sun Howard for Season 10, Episode 128.

These special CANDY BOX editions of Studio Stories delve a little more into the dance works the artists will be sharing. J’Sun Howard of Chicago will be sharing his work, moonless night. The dance is the research/next iteration of a multi-year project titled The Righteous Beauty of the Things Never Accounted For that explores Black fugitivity. moonless night is about Black banality and mundanity and is loosely based on “Enacting Entanglements: A Score for Four,” a performance score conceived by scholar and artist Amber Rose Johnson.

The Arena – Space for Rent

Located in the heart of the Lyn-Lake community, The Arena is available for your rehearsal, class, and event needs!

Hourly rates range from $15-$25, with discounts/special offerings available to BIPOC and LGBTQIA2+ communities.

Our space offers:

  • 1,305 square feet (30×40) of sprung, Marley dance flooring
  • Full wall-length mirrors with curtains for covering if preferred
  • Changing room
  • Free parking on side streets (Aldrich, Bryant, Colfax, 31st, etc.)
  • Access to multiple bus lines, including the 21, 4, 23, 612, and 18

The Arena – Drop-In Moving Practice with Sean Scantlebury

Moving Practice is a weekly class series for professional dancers. Classes prioritize rigor, diversity of contemporary aesthetics, variety of class content, and commitment.

Professional-level dancers of all styles are welcome.
Registration and payment beforehand encouraged: pre-register.
Suggested price $17 per class. Pay-as-able option on all classes – we would rather you join us than not be able to attend due to financial limitations.

Class is a dynamic contemporary technique with a fusion of different styles combining both classical and progressive approaches while creating movement that encourages individual artistic expression.

Sean Scantlebury is a performer and teacher equally adept in modern, ballet, and contemporary. A native of Barbados, Sean is a naturalized American citizen. He moved to New York City at age eight and was invited to study at the New York City Public School for Dance. He became a member of Eliot Feld’s Ballet Tech and performed in the company’s Joyce Theater seasons for ten years. During his first season with Battery Dance in 2003, he took part in a residency in Kraków, Poland, performing for the European Conference on Tolerance. Since then, he has performed, taught, and led Dancing to Connect workshops in more than 25 countries throughout Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. He was also a guest artist for Quorum Ballet (Portugal), Sutra Dance Theatre (Malaysia), Chevalier Ballet (NYC) plus many more. As a Battery Dance teaching artist, he has led classes at Washington Irving High School, Brooklyn’s P.S. 257, the South Bronx’s I.S. 162, and Millennium High School in Lower Manhattan. In 2017, Sean was named by Dance.com as one of 15 black dancers who are changing the world, second only to ABT’s Misty Copeland.

Rent the Young Dance Studios

Young Dance has two large studios available for rent in the Midway neighborhood of Saint Paul. Easily accessible by the Green Line light rail, the 16 and 67 bus lines, and ample parking in the Fairview Business Center parking lot. The space is fully ADA accessible with ramps to the sprung studio floor and automatic door openers.

Friday, 11:00am-9:00pm
Saturday, 3:00-9:00pm

The studios are newly equipped with sprung Harlequin Marley flooring, a Bluetooth speaker system, and wifi. A projector with AV adapters is available by request. Studio 2 has ballet barres and a mirror. The studio has a clear COVID safety plan including regular disinfecting of all floors and surfaces and a new HVAC system that refreshes the air 7-8 times per hour.

Studio 1: Measures 41′ x 38′ and rents at $25/hour
Studio 2: Measures 38′ x 38′ and rents at $20/hour

Young Dance Offers Summer Classes and Camps

Young Dance is excited to announce Summer 2023 programming, running June 6-August 31.

Creative Movement and Dance Together classes will be offered in 3 sessions, meeting once per week on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. We’re also offering camps for 4–7 year olds, or half-day and full-day camps for dancers ages 8–18.

Camp offerings include Music as Movement, Dance + Social Justice, Dance + Photography, Choreography, Dance a Story, All Abilities Dance + Stories, and a unique collection of dance styles in each Variety Dance Camp.
