New Creative Movement Classes Plus More at Young Dance

Four class images of young dancers paired with the Young Dance logo

Since 1987, Young Dance has encouraged youth in our community to build body and spirit through the art of dance. Our mission is to transform lives through movement. We are an inclusive community where creativity flourishes, encouraging personal and artistic excellence through diverse forms of dance.

Classes are already running and many are at capacity!

There is still room for students in Afro-Modern on Wednesday evenings from 7:00–8:30 p.m. Taught by Aneka McMullen, Afro-Modern Dance is a contemporary class where dancers explore full-body expression rooted in West African, Caribbean, and American dance traditions. Participants should be 10–18 years old.

Also for students ages 10–18, Ballet 2 is taught by Hannah Pierce and meets on Tuesdays from 6:30–8:00 p.m. Young Dance teaches ballet skills from a body-positive lens that builds terminology, coordination, flexibility, and rhythm.

We are excited to add Hip Hop 3 and Jazz dance to the roster in January!

Hip Hop 3 is for students ages 13–18 and meets on Mondays from 7:00–8:30 p.m. Taught by Waswa Kalema, the class is a high-energy introduction to many styles of Hip Hop including breaking, popping, locking, and house.

Jazz dance, taught by Anat Shinar, combines rhythm and rootedness with light and flowing movements to create a full-bodied and unique movement language. Jazz will be offered on Thursdays from 5:00–6:30 pm and is for students ages 8–14.

New sections of Creative Movement 1, geared for dancers ages 3–5, will be offered from 4:30–5:30 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays. New classes begin Monday, January 2, and continue through Sunday, May 21, 2023. The final weekend of the session culminates in performances at the Luminary Arts Center.
