Auditions for Janell Howard’s Senior Keystone: The Next Route

Hello everyone, my name is Janell Howard. I am a senior at Augsburg University. I am looking for dancers, spoken word artists, and actors/actresses. I am putting on a production for my senior keystone.

My senior keystone, “The Next Route,” is about my transition from being a college student to an adult after graduation. It integrates potential social and educational changes within all health and fitness fields. These potential contributions of changes also lead to my vocation in life of helping various communities.

There will be an audition for this production on Saturday, October 15 at 4:00pm in the Foss building at Augsburg University. There are 2 parts to the audition. You do not have to audition for both parts, but if you want to you may. This audition is open to all no matter the years of experience one has.

The first half of the audition is for dancing. Dancers please arrive with modern dance attire (black leotard, leggings, or tights). If you have experience of at least 2 years of pointe/ballet and would like to audition for the pointe piece please let me know, so that I can put you down for the pointe selection audition. The second half of the audition is for spoken word, poetry, and acting. Spoken word artists and poets should come prepared with an original piece (2 minutes max). Actors, please be prepared to read a monologue and partner up with others for a dialogue.

If you or know someone who may be interested or have questions about this opportunity please contact me for more information on the audition. My email address is howardjj@augsburg.edu. Thank you for your time and interest!

Katha Dance Theatre Seeks Diverse Dancers to Join Training Program

Katha Dance Theatre has been performing and educating in Kathak, the classical Indian dance form, since 1987. Kathak is a beautiful dance form that is grounded in a mixture of balletic lyrical movements and pirouettes as well as complex rhythmic footwork. Because it originated as a form of storytelling, the form also has a strong emotional component and evokes narratives through dancers’ gestures and facial expressions. KDT has been working for over 35 years to make the form accessible and inclusive through offering programs throughout the state of Minnesota (and beyond) and collaborating with multicultural artists on original work.

With that in mind, KDT is seeking dancers of diverse mediums and ethnic backgrounds to join their school on a track to eventually join the professional company. The organization has received grant funding that enables it to offer full scholarships to at least 5 dancers outside of its majority-South Asian community to begin Kathak training.

The training would begin ASAP, with Fall classes now ongoing. Professional dancers of any kind are welcome, with male dancers being especially encouraged to join. To learn more about the upcoming session, go to our website and email info@kathadance.org if interested.

After developing debilitating chronic pain from a dance injury, McDaniel created the films entitled Exit Strategies. Over the course of five short films, she questions the intersection between trauma, chronic illness, and healing. Nagle’s improvisation score engages audience participation to explore individual and collective choice-making.

October 14 at 7:00pm: Work-In-Progress Showing

By creating dance and video improvisation structures with elements of unpredictability, the artists seek to translate how pain shapes interaction with ourselves, other people, and the environment.

Fall Sound Garden at Texa-Tonka Park

Amidst the fall colors and falling leaves, dancers Sarah Baumert, Suzette Gilreath, Erika Hansen, Megan Mayer, and Leslie O’Neill perform in a new, site-specific Sound Garden installation at Texa-Tonka Park in St. Louis Park, along the majestic North Cedar Lake Trail, next to Victoria Lake. This premiere performance directed by composer JG Everest will also feature site-specific poetry by Chavonn Shen, Lisa Yankton and many more, along with site-specific photography and natural sculptures created in a community workshop by sculptor Jim Proctor.

The Fall Sound Garden event is a free, family-friendly, self-guided event that features a sound installation of 60+ small, wireless speakers, distributed throughout the park, with live accompaniment by roving musicians and dancers, and live poetry and site-specific visual art. Each small speaker is playing a different part of the whole piece of music, creating a unique, immersive experience that is described as “a concert you can move through.” Event is free, but registration is required due to limited capacity and possible program changes.
