RS Seeking Jazz and American Social Dance-Inspired Works for Stage and Screen

Rhythmically Speaking, a Twin Cities-based dance company with a 14-year history and a national reputation for excellence in jazz, seeks works for stage and screen for presentation as a part of our program The Cohort 2022. The program includes a live stage production in the Twin Cities in summer 2022 and dance film screenings in the fall in partnership with the Sans Souci Festival of Dance Cinema (CO), a niche film festival specializing in films that integrate the aesthetics of dance and cinema.

Submitted works must explore jazz and/or American social dance ideas from forms including but not limited to tap and hip hop styles. We encourage you to join the ongoing conversation around “what constitutes jazz and American social dance,” and the sociocultural histories of and innovations in these styles by submitting. Artists 21 and older at any point in their careers are welcomed to submit.

Separate curatorial panels for stage and screen works will select three works for a live production in Minneapolis in August 2022, and 7-10 films for fall screening events. Stage submissions must be for eight or fewer dancers and between 15-22 minutes in length, and will be selected through both this open call and by invitation. The staged works panel will be selecting two works of existent, revisited repertoire from visiting (based outside of Minnesota) artists, and one proposal for a new work from a local (Minnesota-based) artist. All stage works will be performed by the Rhythmically Speaking company dancers. Screen works submissions must be between 2-15 minutes in length.

Twin Cities Ballet’s Mini-Nutcracker

You are invited to “The Mini-Nutcracker,” a delightful abbreviated version of Twin Cities Ballet’s classic, A Minnesota Nutcracker. “The Mini-Nutcracker” is designed to introduce children to the magic of the family favorite.

This beloved holiday tradition with soaring music by Tchaikovsky promises to hold the attention of even the youngest theatergoer. Suitable for all ages, this version is less than an hour and is performed by cast members of Twin Cities Ballet’s full-length production. A perfect holiday treat!

Mat 2 – Intermediate/Advanced Exercises

Mat 2 includes the remaining intermediate and advanced level exercises as well as essential movement principles and training tips for advancing clients to the higher levels. Pilates for sports specific activities are also covered.
Prerequisites: Mat 1

Taught by Cari Riis Stemmler and Tiza Wynn Riley.

If you are taking this course online, you will need to have the following equipment:

  • A mat
  • Additional props, which may or may not be used in class include:
    • resistance bands (medium and light resistance)
    • a Pilates Magic Circle (Ultra Fit Circle and other Pilates rings acceptable)
    • a foam roller
    • an inflatable ball (8-10″ or TOGU Ball)

Taking online courses: While we believe there is no better way to learn movement than in person, we understand that online is a good option for many. When taking a movement class online, you must be completely visible to the instructor, lighting must be good enough to see detailed movement, and internet connection must be reliable and strong. Balanced Body is not responsible for lost class hours if your internet crashes or your connection is unstable.

Join our team! The Cowles Center is looking for an Audience Services Manager – a crucial part of our day-to-day operations and Box Office oversight. Do you have customer-facing, sales, or membership experience? This could be the role for you!

The Audience Services Manager plays an important role in the day-to-day operations at The Cowles Center, creating a welcoming and safe environment for patrons attending events throughout The Cowles Center complex. This position is responsible for all aspects of The Cowles Center’s box office and front-of-house operations, including supervising a part-time staff of events associates, managing The Cowles Center’s volunteer program, and overseeing all ticketing activity and patron interactions. The Audience Services Manager reports directly to the Director of Operations and Production.

This is a full-time hybrid position with benefits. Salary range: $41,000-$47,000.

Twin Cities Ballet – Dance with Me at Lakeville Area Arts Center

Join TCB’s professional ballet dancers at the Lakeville Area Arts Center for a fun-filled interactive performance event designed for families and children ages preschool through eight. The program is less than an hour long—the perfect length for busy schedules and curious minds.

”Dance With Me” highlights age- and ability-appropriate body movement using different forms of dance, and features unique monthly themes, short dance classes, optional audience participation, and short performance demonstrations in costume by TCB’s professional company dancers. You are welcome to enjoy one, many, or all of the programs!

TCB’s A Minnesota Nutcracker Returns to the Stage, Live and In-Person

TCB’s beloved holiday classic with a Minnesota twist returns to Ames Center this December! This production retains all the magic and traditions of the classic Nutcracker ballet, but features Minnesota settings with stunning, custom-designed Minnesota-centric backdrops, and offers audience members something truly unique: a connection to home. Deemed one of the 12 essential holiday events by MPR, A Minnesota Nutcracker is delightful entertainment for the whole family! 

This year also includes the launch of Twin Cities Ballet’s new sensory-relaxed performance series, the first of its kind in Minnesota. These performances are designed to be more accessible for persons with sensory sensitivities and families with young children through relaxed theater rules and modified sensory elements. We are thrilled to be able to share the love of ballet with people who may experience difficulties in a regular performance setting. 

In addition, TCB is offering a one-hour Mini-Nutcracker at Lakeville Area Arts Center on November 30. This short and sweet version is a perfect way to introduce young children to the magic of Nutcracker!

We seek an active, innovative practitioner with a developing national or international profile whose creative research focuses on contemporary lensing of African Diasporic movement or Urban and Street/Hip Hop forms to join our program as an Assistant Professor on the tenure track. This position will lead their specific movement track, be asked to teach in the program’s more
general contemporary technique track if they have the necessary background, and have the opportunity to offer other courses in the program depending on the candidate’s background and research. Our dance program works intentionally to build a contemporary technique track that is informed by a wide range of aesthetics from across the globe.

Required Qualifications
● M.F.A. in Dance, other terminal graduate degree or equivalent professional experience and recognition
● At least 1 year of college- or university-level teaching experience or equivalent in non-university institutions in African Diasporic movement or Urban & Street/Hip Hop forms
● At least 1 year of college- or university-level teaching experience in dancemaking/dance composition or equivalent in non-university institutions
● A distinguished and active record of creative research output and dance pedagogy on a trajectory towards or already having an established national or international profile in either African Diasporic movement or Urban and Street/Hip Hop Forms
● Demonstration and understanding of the importance of the integration of dance scholarship, creativity and physical regimen to an undergraduate dance major’s growth as an artist, thinker, researcher and global citizen in alignment with the dance program’s
mission of Contemporary Dance in Global Contexts and goal to provide a near conservatory dance training embedded in a national recognized liberal arts college

TU Dance Center: Adult Beginning Modern with Jennifer Ilse

This workshop with Jennifer Ilse approaches movement with a goal of balance – fluidity in strength and power in softness. This class is centered on breath and economy of movement to teach internal and external body awareness, rhythm and phrasing, and ensemble dancing through modern dance patterns and improvisation.

TU Dance Center: Adult Beginning Ballet with Tina Anderson Wallum

Provided by Tina Anderson Wallum, the class work is based on the principles of classical ballet technique, including turnout, distribution of weight, counter pull, plumb line, balance, squareness, alignment and stance, transfer of weight, lift, and counter balance. Also it is based on centering, core strength, flexor tone, extensor tone, muscle currenting, cogwheeling, coordination, and musicality. By the end of the workshop students should understand a basic level of vocabulary and be able to execute it with ease and confidence. Students are intellectually, emotionally and physically supported with validation, engagement, and a sense of belonging.
