Dance Tenure Track Position 2022-2023 – St. Olaf College

The Department of Dance at St. Olaf College invites applications for a full-time, tenure track position in Dance at the Assistant Professor level to begin August 2022.

We are looking for an innovative, versatile teacher and artist scholar with depth and breadth of experience in African/African Diasporic dance theory and practice and evidence of integrating these into their teaching and research. The candidate will mentor undergraduate students academically and artistically, as well as stage choreographic and performance works for a varied student body. MFA in Dance or Ph.D. in Dance or a related field in hand or near completion by time of appointment required.

Review of applications will begin on January 11, 2022, and will continue until the position is filled. Finalist interviews are expected in March 2022.

Erin Thompson Teaches Advanced Contemporary Classes In Person

Erin’s advanced level contemporary hybrid class through Zenon Dance School includes floor work, standing warm-ups, and phrase work, all designed to enhance the healthy use of joints and muscle groups as dancers release their weight fully into the support of the ground. Experiential awareness, body mapping, improvisation, and creative work are included as dancers channel their own expressive artistry within the movement. The delightful Dean Magraw will accompany on guitar.

Center for Performing Arts Community Celebration

Celebrate the Center completing construction with community, food, and (of course) the arts! Mahto Peta Toispaye Drum group and poet Halee Kirkwood open, followed by food and a cabaret of performances.

Emceed by local artist Melissa Birch, onsite performances include Duniya Drum & Dance, Roberta Carlson, and Ragamala Dance Company performing Thillana; composer Maura Bosch and Hurly Burly and Transient Luminous Event from The Waves Cafe; musicians Brass Solidarity and Nate Case; and dancers Kerry Parker, Gemma Isaacson, Helen Hatch, Alejandra Iannone, and Elayna Waxse, with sound by Andrew Bocher and Seth Conover.

Young Dance is committed to offering a fun and developmentally appropriate curriculum. Our exceptional Teaching Artists bring an unparalleled level of excellence, where young artists can experience a myriad of styles and techniques. We provide a breadth of opportunities for youth to engage with dance in the way that feels best for them and that supports them in finding and lifting their voices.

Classes include Dance Together, Creative Movement, Hip Hop, All Abilities Dancing, Modern, Ballet, Choreography, Performing Company, and more.

Friday Morning Jazz: In-Person and on Zoom with Erinn This Week

Friday Morning Jazz continues this week, with regular co-teacher Erinn Liebhard back at the helm this and the following two weeks, before she takes a long break for maternity leave! Erinn’s approach to jazz emphasizes groove, interaction and improvisation, is inspired by both social and concert dance movement (particularly that with African diasporic roots), and is driven by jazz music. Come groove it out!

Collide Theatrical presents Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein

The ultimate story about a human’s need for motherly love and connection. Author Mary Shelley, an unmarried pregnant teen, wrote the infamous science-fiction novel not long after the death of her first child during a period of immense loss and personal suffering. Her remarkable journey is told in parallel with the classic novel through a mix of theatrical dance styles.

Featuring Patrick Jeffrey as Dr. Frankenstein, Renee Guittar as The Creature, and Betsy Nelson as Mary Shelley. Additional cast includes Grace Janiszewski, Brian Bose, Megan Carter, and Ben Siglin.

Created by Regina Peluso with direction by Heather Brockman and Regina Peluso. Choreography by Peluso, Brockman, Guittar, Jeffrey, Jarod Boltjes, and Rush Benson.

James Sewell Ballet’s 30th Anniversary Retrospective

Join us in celebrating a remarkable 30 years of James Sewell Ballet! Powerful performers showcase favorite gems from the past along with new hits, highlighting the company’s distinct voice and vision. This program will also feature a new dazzling work from Da’Rius Malone. Live musicians will accompany select works.

At the Ragamala Training Center, students receive classical training in the dynamic style of Bharatanatyam passed down to us by the internationally renowned dancer/choreographer Padma Bhushan Alarmél Valli, considered to be one of India’s greatest living masters. Open to students of all ages, backgrounds, and locations, Ragamala classes give students an opportunity to learn about and immerse themselves in the arts and culture of India, and to connect with a community of passionate, hard-working individuals.

Young Dance Presents Fall Fling With Fairview Business Center Partners

Join Young Dance and friends this Saturday, October 16 from 3:00-6:00 p.m. for Fall Fling!

This outdoor celebration is fun for the whole family! Enjoy performances by Young Dance, CAAM Chinese Dance Theater, Smiling Drum, St. Paul Ballet, and Youth Performance Company alongside activities such as games, participatory demonstrations, and bubbles. Food will be available from the Got Rice food truck. Masked tours will be provided for anyone interested in seeing the organizations inside the Fairview Business Center.

Individuals with and without disabilities regularly engage with the organizations at the Fairview Business Center. We value access and continue to work to improve our programming and space to better meet people’s needs. We will provide audio description and an ASL interpreter. Parking is wheelchair accessible and seating will be available. Please let us know if there are any other accommodations needed to participate in this event. 

Masks recommended. Activities will be outdoors, but in the event of rain the event will continue inside at each partner’s location.
