Katha Dance Theatre Summer Kathak Intensive

Katha Dance Theatre (KDT) has been teaching and performing Kathak, the North Indian classical dance form, for over three decades. Kathak is an elegant dance form characterized by rhythmic footwork, graceful hand gestures, pirouettes, lyrical movements, and storytelling. KDT is excited to be offering a two-week virtual Kathak intensive this August, to be co-taught by Kathak master Durga Arya-Krüger. Classes will be offered via Zoom on weekend mornings (taught by Ms. Arya-Krüger) and weekday evenings (taught by KDT instructors).

The intensive is open to anyone with two or more years of Kathak experience.
Classes run from August 14-26 for the following groups:

Group A: youth and adults with 2 or more years of Kathak experience

Group B: youth and adults with 4 or more years of Kathak experience

Group C: youth and adults with 5 or more years of Kathak experience. This includes intermediate students, interns and KDT Company dancers.

If you are new to KDT, please email us at info@kathadance.org and we will help you determine your class placement.

Northrop Presents The State Ballet of Georgia

Back by popular demand, The State Ballet of Georgia’s original film gets an encore on Northrop’s plaza in a special outdoor screening. Created specifically for Northrop audiences, this peek at the Georgian ballet company features gala-style excerpts of ballet repertory, interviews with Artistic Director Nina Ananiashvili and featured dancers, and breathtaking views of the State Opera and Ballet Theatre and the city of Tbilisi. The film’s featured ballet repertory includes clips from a number of ballets including Laurencia, premiered in 1939 by Vakhtang Chabukiani; Sagalobeli, a 2007 ballet choreographed to Georgian folk melodies by Yuri Possokhov; Leonid Lavrovsky’s Romeo and Juliet, which was the first full version choreographed to Prokofiev’s score; and a taste of The State Ballet of Georgia’s Giselle.

Before the film, live music by Four Voices String Quartet will set the scene for an evening of beauty and art. The ensemble, all members of the Minnesota Opera Orchestra, are frequent performers in the Northrop Dance Series. An accomplished classical ensemble, they have collaborated extensively across genres and are currently focusing on works of living female composers.

The film will be subtitled in English, with other accessibility services available upon request.

Studio Stories Features Candy Box Dance Artists

ARENA DANCES’ weekly podcast shares a mini series featuring artists that will premiere new work at our CANDY BOX Dance Festival July 12-16! This Thursday, tune in to our conversation with Pedro Pablo of Viva la Pepa and next Tuesday, listen to HIJACK!

Pedro Pablo
July 8 at Noon
Pedro Pablo (they/them) is a Venezuelan-raised, Minneapolis-based queer dancer / performance maker, and founder/director of Viva la Pepa (www.vivalapepa.org), a collective of multi-generational queer performers in the Twin Cities. Their works are fueled by the overlapping values of Latinx and Queer cultures: melodrama, passion, decadence, and sensuality.

HIJACK
July 13 at Noon
HIJACK is the Minneapolis-based choreographic collaboration of Kristin Van Loon and Arwen Wilder. HIJACK is the confluence and clash of two independent compositional/kinesthetic impulses. Their dances embrace juxtaposition. Their dances house unlikely intimates and question “who is the enemy?” Over the last 28 years they have created over 100 dances and performed in venues ranging from proscenium to barely-legal.
