Dance Theatre of Harlem’s The Art of Ballet

A Virtual Lecture Demonstration

Viewable on-demand:
Tuesday, April 27, 10:30am CDT through Tuesday, May 11 11:59pm, CDT
FREE.
Perfect for grades 5-12.
Registration required.

Join members of the Dance Theatre of Harlem for a fun, accessible introduction to the art of ballet. In this lecture demonstration, the dancers pull back the curtain to reveal how the elements of classical ballet training, choreography, and theatrical production come together to create the magic of a ballet performance. The hour-long program is divided into three sections: a brief history of DTH and the art form of ballet, demonstrations of basic ballet training (barre, women’s pointe work, men’s center work, pirouettes, and lifts) and stagecraft, followed by four excerpts from the Dance Theatre of Harlem repertoire.

Family Day with Susana di Palma

Explore Spanish culture and flamenco tradition with Teaching Artist Susana di Palma during Flamenco con Abuelita (we hear our puppet friends Toro and Carmencita will be there too)! This is a one-hour, Zoom-based dance class on Saturday, April 24.

Want more? The Cowles Center has expanded upon the traditional Family Day offering to provide an easy-to-follow toolkit exploring flamenco through fun activities such as coloring pages, DIY ideas, and fun videos with Susana herself! Participants are welcome to engage with the toolkit as much as they like (or not at all) ahead of Saturday’s class.

Registration closes at 8:00 am on April 24.

Registrants will be emailed the toolkit ahead of Susana’s class.

This activity is designed for youth up to fifth grade.

Amplify: A Multi-Disciplinary Virtual Art Show

Hello! We are a group of nine students enrolled in the Dance Production class at the University of Minnesota. We have spent the 2020-2021 academic school year learning how to create and produce our show, Amplify. We came together with a common goal of creating a virtual show of art work done by university students to premiere on May 1, 2021. Our group shares a love for art and dance.

Amplify, curated by Dance Production 2021, is a virtual multi-disciplinary art show including five artists creating their own original artwork. Amplify’s mission is to diversify and amplify artistic and cultural voices rooted in the university arts community through research and/or performance-based work. The show will include dancers, choreographers, composers and a sculptor. The show will include a presentation of the work each artist has created, as well as Q&A’s.

Come watch Amplify starting on May 1 at 7:00pm! Link to the online show will stay active until Sunday, May 2 at 11:59PM.

Tickets are “pick your price” from $6-25 and can be found at https://www.tickets.umn.edu/UMTE/Online/article/Amplify.

We can’t wait to share with you all the creations that these amazing artists have made!

Pop-Up SPRING Sound Garden on West River Parkway, 12:00-4:00pm

Dancers Leslie O’Neill, Megan Mayer, Sarah Baumert, and Erika Hansen perform their site-specific, roving, durational movement scores across a three-acre site along West River Parkway as part of composer/director JG Everest’s immersive SPRING Sound Garden sound and performance installation event.

The first of four seasonal “pop-up” Sound Garden events along West River Parkway in 2021, the SPRING Sound Garden features layers of site-specific dance, music, poetry, and visual art among some of the oldest trees in Minneapolis.

Sound Gardens are designed as durational, self-guided experiences intended for audience to connect more meaningfully to a particular place and the natural world. The spatial sound score and live dance and musical elements are meant to accompany the sounds and physical elements that are already there – the birds, the trees, the wind, the leaves. Audiences are encouraged to both circulate and linger at their own pace, following their own impulses for what to pay attention to.

Free admission, but reservations required, with limited capacity.

This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council’s Arts Project Support grant, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
