TCB’s The Ruby Slippers: A Wizard of Oz Ballet: Livestream and On Demand

Twin Cities Ballet is excited to present our new original dance film, The Ruby Slippers: A Wizard of Oz Ballet.  Professionally filmed onstage at Ames Center, TCB’s fresh reimagining of the iconic tale features an original adapted storyline, musical compilation, and choreography that ingeniously blends ballet, jazz, hip hop, and modern dance styles. Join Dorothy and her friends for this fun and approachable family-friendly event!

Three great opportunities to experience the ballet:

1) Mother’s Day Livestreeam Fundraising Event: Sunday, May 9 at 2:00pm

This is the premiere of the film!  While there is no cost to attend this special livestream event, we are asking and hoping for donations to help support TCB and keep it strong and vibrant. Covid-19 has caused TCB substantial financial harm, and we are so grateful for any and all donations.

2) On-Demand Digital Streaming: May 13–16

We are also offering on-demand streaming of the film Thursday, May 13, through Sunday, May 16. During this time, you can view the film as many times as you like for a nominal one-time fee of just $40 per household.

3) Special VIP Offer to Attend the Filming in Person: May 5–6

TCB is offering a limited number of special VIP passes that will give a unique “behind-the-scenes” look at the filming process for this new, original video production! Become a 2021 sponsor of Twin Cities Ballet at the Director Level or higher ($2500+) on or before May 3, and you can receive a special VIP Pass that permits up to 4 individuals in the same household to view the filming process in person at Ames Center on Wednesday and Thursday, May 5 and 6.  A one-of-a-kind opportunity!

New Work Creation Process – INSTINCT Summer Dance Intensive

Join ARENA DANCES’ professional dancers and local pre-professionals this summer for one week of transformative movement exploration. Hone your technique with daily modern classes and then craft your artistry in choreography development with Artistic Director Mathew Janczewksi. 

Work directly with Mathew, as he embarks on a new choreographic process with the intensive students – a unique opportunity! With career development being an emphasis of this intensive, Mathew will also be available for scheduled 1:1 conversations with dancers to offer feedback specific to the dancer or share insights on the field. 

The week will culminate in an informal showing for friends, family and the community. Additionally, participants will be considered for apprenticeship positions with ARENA DANCES for the ‘21-22 Season.

Rhythmically Speaking and Keane Sense of Rhythm Present Jazz on Tap

Local dance companies Rhythmically Speaking (RS) and Keane Sense of Rhythm (KSR) are thrilled to be working in conjunction to present Jazz on Tap, a series of live jazz and tap dance shows happening May 22-23, 2021 at outdoor venue The Shed at The Lab Brewery in St. Paul!

Rhythmically Speaking is presenting The Cohort 20/21, their show rescheduled from August 2020. Keane Sense of Rhythm is presenting Mirror and Fission, featuring works by choreographer Davon Suttles. As if live dance isn’t enough, there will also be live music, food trucks, and great drinks!

Ballet Co.Laboratory: An American in Paris

Sway through the streets of 1950’s Paris with Ballet Co.Laboratory in Peter Davison’s An American in Paris. Inspired by the iconic Gene Kelly musical, this production will have you tapping your toes to George Gershwin’s jazzy and recognizable score.

An American in Paris tells the story of Jerry, an aspiring American artist who meets Lise, the girl of his dreams, while exploring the City of Lights. What he doesn’t know is that Lise, the local beauty with all the charm, has already promised her heart to another. Can Jerry convince her that their love is here to stay?

AMP is Back with Weekly Movement Practices in April

Each week: Move BIG from home with Alternative Motion Project! Move and sweat in a weekly online contemporary movement practice. Explore mobility, length, momentum, 3-D expansion, while pushing the boundaries and physicality of a smaller space in a curious and enlivening environment, often to fun, retro pop hits. Come as you are in the space that you have! Suitable for pre-professional/professional movers in any size space.

Register at least 30 minutes prior to class time. The Zoom link will be sent to your email address within 24 hours of the class time. You will need a Zoom account to access the practice.

This practice is offered on a sliding scale, $5-$15. Payments will directly support instructors. No one will be turned away due to lack of funds. Please email financial concerns and any questions to alternativemotionproject@gmail.com.

Train with some of the Twin Cities top talents in theatrical jazz dance while taking your dance and performing skills to the next level. Our program is tailored to meet the individual goals and needs of EACH dancer. ALL ARE WELCOME.

Threads Dance Project: Watch Karen’s Tenth Anniversary Picks

Every month from March through December 2021, Threads Dance Project will release some of Artistic Director Karen’s 10th Anniversary Picks.

Pay-as-able in multiples of 10; from $1, $10, $100, or even $1,000 to view ten years of Karen’s selected works! April’s picks include Childless Mother with guest artist Sweet Honey in the Rock (2014), Fear the Massa, Master’s Lament & Da Whippin’ Post (2014), and Black Man Walking (2014).

Each release will be 25-30 minutes in length. Once registered, you will receive a private link and password that will allow you to view these works from April 19-May 5, 2021.

Threads Dance Connections Summer Intensive is Open for Early Enrollment

Threads Dance Project is excited to announce the return of our unique summer intensive experience! Even more exciting is that this year’s intensive will serve as a preliminary workshop where students can get early practice with audition material in preparation for our upcoming audition for our new pre-professional dance training program, Youth Dance Project (YDP), scheduled for July 31.

Our Dance Connections 2021 Summer Intensive includes developmentally appropriate movement classes in ballet, modern, creative movement, composition/choreography, improvisation, and hip hop. We are especially eager for your student to experience the distinctive arts activism and dance history course that gives our summer intensive its name!

We invite you to join us in our bright and airy new studio this summer where your student will enjoy rigorous dance education in a fun and inclusive atmosphere. Register by June 1 to receive a discount. Come learn, experience, create and connect with us!

TU Dance Center: Renting TU Dance Center

TU Dance Center is available for rental when not in use by the school.

TU Dance Center features:

Reception area and front desk for check-in or event use. Access to adjacent dressing room and green room with kitchenette are available upon request.

Both studios: sprung dance floor with Marley-type surface by Harlequin, wall of mirrors, portable ballet barre units 10′ in length, room-level sound system with CD and mini-jack inputs, 50′ LCD TV cart for presentation and videoconferencing. Large windows providing ample natural light.

Studio 1 only: a curtain that can be drawn on entire mirror, wall-mounted ballet barres of 27′ and 33′.

Community Movement Collective Open Classes

CoMoCollective offers small group classes for professionals and adult dancers alike to keep us moving together during this uncertain time. For safety class sizes are limited, temperatures are taken at entrance and masks are required throughout class. Come join us!
