Young Dance Seeks Teaching Artists for 2021-22 Session

Young Dance is seeking teachers, assistants, and substitutes for 2021-22 and beyond. Teachers with experience in the following styles are encouraged to apply: Hip Hop, Afro-Modern, Modern/Contemporary Technique, Ballet, Percussive Dance, and Creative Movement.

Founded in 1987, we believe young people are artists with something important to say and that working across differences is a benefit to all. Our mission is to transform lives through movement. We are an inclusive community where creativity flourishes and healthy risk-taking is encouraged. Our classes are open to everyone of all levels and abilities. Participants enjoy our collaborative and student-led approach to dance education. Our curriculum emphasizes technique, improvisation, and choreography through the elements of dance: Body, Action, Space, Time, and Energy. Dancers develop skills in observing, participating, and reflecting in a safe and supportive environment that values a commitment to self, to the group, and to lifelong learning.

Pay rate is $45/hour for lead teaching, $22.50/hour for assisting.

Covid-19 vaccination required.

Apply for Workroom Residency with Young Dance

Calling all BIPOC artists and artists with disabilities to apply to our Workroom Residency!

Workroom is a Young Dance residency program centering BIPOC artists and artists with disabilities with their creative research and rehearsal process. Artists will have access to Young Dance dance studios (with Marley floors and no mirrors). More details about the studio space can be provided upon request. We hope to support artists should they choose to share their work publicly, however this is not a requirement. Time periods for Workroom residencies are slotted for October-January and February-May.

If they are accepted into the residency, artists notified by Wednesday, September 15, 2021.

McKnight Dancer and Choreographer Fellows Informational Webinars – August 17 and 19

The McKnight Fellowship for Dancers and Choreographers Intent to Apply form is now open. The deadline is Wednesday, September 8.

We will be offering two webinars for all interested applicants.

These sessions, led by Program Director Dana Kassel, will be accessed through the online meeting site Zoom. RSVP to mckfell@thecowlescenter.org . You will be sent a link to enter the webinar about 24 hours before it begins.

This information session will be geared towards first-time applicants and focus on frequently asked questions regarding the application materials – the artistic statement, resume and work sample. Current Fellows will also join us to share their experience as applicants. Participants will be able to ask questions via a chat feature, or are encouraged to submit a question by email when you RSVP.

Twin Cities Ballet Open Company Positions

Twin Cities Ballet has an open position for a male company dancer, Soloist and Principal level. Competitive salaried position, 34-week season. Strong classical ballet and contemporary technique required. 

Submit the following audition materials by email:

  • Your resumé.
  • Two photos: first arabesque; and a headshot showing at least 3/4 face. Either attach small format photos or provide a link.
  • Video link showing classwork or performance clips, clearly demonstrating your classical ballet technique.
  • State whether you are currently eligible to work in the United States.

Shows start at 7:30pm and will run approximately 75 minutes, with a short audience Q+A afterwards.

In the fictional town of Absalom, a larger-than-life chess match is played between two sinister railroad barons. Their strange game moves through a series of vignettes – the Dance of the Pawns, the Dance of the Knights, the Dance of the Bishops, etc. – in which the unfortunate chess pieces find themselves being made to do battle inside a prison they do not fully understand. As the game progresses, the chess pieces begin to become cognizant of their bleak situation…and attempt to lead a rebellion against the game itself.

Pop-Up FALL Sound Garden on West River Parkway

Dancers Leslie O’Neill, Megan Mayer, Sarah Baumert, and Erika Hansen perform their site-specific, roving, durational movement scores across a three-acre site along West River Parkway as part of composer/director JG Everest’s immersive FALL Sound Garden sound and performance installation event.

The roving movement scores will begin by 1:00pm and will come and go throughout the space until 4:00pm.

The third of four seasonal “pop-up” Sound Garden events along West River Parkway in 2021, the FALL Sound Garden features layers of site-specific dance, music, poetry, and visual art among some of the oldest trees in Minneapolis.

Sound Gardens are designed as durational, self-guided experiences intended for audience to connect more meaningfully to a particular place and the natural world. The spatial sound score and live dance and musical elements are meant to accompany the sounds and physical elements that are already there – the birds, the trees, the wind, the leaves. Audiences are encouraged to both circulate and linger at their own pace, following their own impulses for what to pay attention to.

Twin Cities Ballet Announces Full Season of Live, In-Person Performances

Twin Cities Ballet is thrilled to announce a season of in-person performances, featuring exciting premieres, the return of some of our most popular ballets, and, as always, fantastic dancing and storytelling. You won’t want to miss it!

Season Highlights:

Dracula: This world premiere is part of a mixed bill performance at Ames Center in Burnsville on October 27-28.
Dracula will have an original libretto based on the classic novel, with an original musical score composed for this production by Minnesota composer Simon Sperl.

A Minnesota Nutcracker: TCB’s beloved holiday classic with a Minnesota twist returns to Ames Center on December 10–12, and will include the launch of its new sensory-relaxed performance series, the first of its kind in Minnesota. These performances are designed to be more accessible for persons with sensory sensitivities and families with young children.

In addition, TCB’s one-hour Mini-Nutcracker at Lakeville Area Arts Center on November 30 is a perfect way to introduce children and families to this holiday delight.

TCB’s Choreographic Voices: TCB artists will explore the creative process and present experimental and new works on January 28-29 at the Dance Cube performance space at Ballet Royale Minnesota in Lakeville.

Pink Floyd’s The Wall: A Rock Ballet: Back by popular demand, TCB will be performing its smash-hit original rock ballet at the Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul on March 11–13, with live music from popular local band Momentary Lapse of Floyd.

Giselle: The season will conclude with the beautiful ballet classic, Giselle, at Ames Center in Burnsville on May 6–8. This will be the Twin Cities Ballet company premiere of one of the most popular and enduring ballet favorites.

Young Dance Performing Company Community Service Project

Thursday, August 19, 1:30-3:30pm

FREE and open to those interested in or signed up for the Young Dance Performing Company for the 2021-22 school year. Join Chitra Vairavan, YD Program Director, and Anat Shinar, YD Artistic Director, in a team-building afternoon through service to our community. At Young Dance, we believe in being dedicated members of our communities and that service to others empowers us and those around us.

We will meet at Young Dance and then head to the neighboring parks to do some park clean-up and movement, as well.

Collide Theatrical Seeking Male Dancers

Collide Theatrical Dance Company is seeking male dancers with strong acting abilities for several shows in our 2021/2022 season.

Company dancers must be 18 years or older and fully vaccinated. Please send the following materials to admin@collidetheatrical.org to be considered:

  • Headshot
  • Resume
  • 3-5 minutes of ballet center work including adagio, pirouettes, and grand allegro
  • 3-5 minutes of jazz highlighting technique and acting abilities

Erin Thompson Teaches Advanced Contemporary Classes In Person

A light-skinned dancer in her 60s tosses her arms in a curve to the left while she rises on her toes

Erin’s advanced level contemporary hybrid class through Zenon Dance School includes floor work, standing warm-ups, and phrase work, all designed to enhance the healthy use of joints and muscle groups as dancers release their weight fully into the support of the ground. Experiential awareness, body mapping, improvisation, and creative work are included as dancers channel their own expressive artistry within the movement. The delightful Dean Magraw will accompany on guitar.
